Alexander and I left the villa in the early afternoon after a lazy morning spent making love on the couch and eating cold French toast. I was in the passenger seat of his car dressed in Macey’s clothes, which he assured me that she wouldn’t mind that I was borrowing.
I dozed as Alexander drove through the busy traffic. Last night and this morning had seeped all of the energy from my body, like water draining from a tub.
Alexander smirked when he saw how tired I was. He picked up my hand, bringing it to his lips and kissing the back of it. “We could spend next weekend at the villa if you’d like,” he said.
I chuckled and groaned theatrically. “I don’t think that my body could handle another weekend there!” I joked.
“You should run with me,” he suggested. “We need to start building up your stamina.”
”
I rolled my eyes, but I couldn’t help the giggle that escaped past my lips. “The day that I take up jogging is the day that you need to shoot me in the head because it would mean that an alien has taken over my body.”
Alexander laughed and squeezed my thigh.
His warm touch sent a jolt down my legs. I didn’t think I would ever get tired of this man’s touch.
Alexander turned the radio up, and we held hands, singing along to the song pumping through the speakers.
I couldn’t keep the wide grin off my face if I tried.

Alexander and I got caught in a traffic jam, and I became so tired that I eventually fell asleep. Alexander was holding my hand and rubbing soothing circles on my palm.
The warm sun pleasantly heated my face, and the familiar sounds of New York were muted from the car window.
I felt happy to be alive as I fell asleep with a smile on my face.
The next thing I knew, Alexander was driving into the parking garage of our apartment building. The change in lighting was what woke me up. One minute, the warm sun was caressing my face,

the next second it disappeared. I didn’t immediately open my eyes since I just wanted to be able to sleep more.
Alexander found a parking spot, and I opened my eyes halfway and was about to sit up straight when something strange happened.
Once he took the keys out of the ignition, Alexander’s phone vibrated. He looked down at it, read the message on the screen, frowned, and then deleted it.
Suspicion flowed through me even though I tried to reassure myself that I had nothing to worry about. But I had to admit that had been suspicious of him. Why did he delete the message? Was it because I was with him and he didn’t want me to see? The whole thing left an unpleasant taste in my mouth.
But I didn’t want Alexander to know that I had seen him acting strangely, so I pretended to still be asleep.
My heart lifted as he woke me up with a gentle kiss on my forehead. But then my heart sank when I remembered his weird behavior.
I was quiet as we walked across the busy street. Alexander tried to chat with me, but I only gave him one–word answers and noncommittal nods.
In the elevator, he put his warm arm around my shoulders and pulled me into him. I tried to stay strong and not lean into his inviting body heat, but it was like trying to resist a delicious slice of chocolate cake.
“Why don’t you come and have lunch with me at my apartment?” he suggested. “Mike is there, and he can make you anything you want.”
I was about to accept, but then a tidal wave of guilt washed over me when I remembered that my parents were still at my apartment. I didn’t get to see them enough, and we had made plans to go sightseeing today.
“I’m sorry, Alexander. I promised to spend time with my parents. They are only in town for the weekend,” I said.
He kissed the top of my head, making my heart melt for him. “I understand. Maybe the three of you can come over for dinner tonight. Mike can whip up something, or we can even order in.”
“Maybe,” I hedged.
