Alexander snorted. “I’m sure she did.” He leaned forward, his eyes darkening. “Next time you see her, make sure to let her know that if she dares to hurt Olivia, I will do whatever it takes to punish her. I will banish her from New York forever.”

Helen’s eyes widened with fear. She gazed at Alexander’s tense body and murderous expression with horror. She couldn’t believe that her son–her pride and joy–could act so callous and unseemly. She had never seen him act like this before. Helen knew it was because of Olivia’s influence. Alexander would have never acted this way before her. It made Helen’s heart ache to see him behaving like this.

How could he speak about Jess with such hatred and vehemence? Alexander used to love Jess, and despite some of the mistakes she had made in the past, Jess absolutely adored her son. That was the reason she became so upset when Alexander broke up with her. Was it a crime for a woman to love a man with her whole heart?

Alexander could tell that he had scared his mother. He regretted pushing her too far. He sighed and leaned back in his chair, the fight leaving him.

“I’m sorry if I went too far,” he murmured. “I wanted to use this visit to see how you felt about Olivia and I dating, and I’m afraid that we got completely off–topic.” He paused, but his mother refused to meet his gaze. “I think that it’s time for me to go.”

Helen remained silent. She had many things that she wanted to say to her son, but most of them were going to be filled with venom at this moment. She didn’t want to say anything that would ruin her plan.

Alexander rested his hand on his mother’s shoulder for a few moments. “Goodbye, Mother.”

She put her hand on her son’s warm one and squeezed it.

Alexander left her on the balcony, surrounded by the garden that she had planted herself.

Downstairs, Alexander ran into his father. Neil was pouring himself a glass of whiskey,

“Hello there, Son,” Neil said. “Would you like a glass and join your old man for a game of chess?”

Alexander merely shook his head. There was a cold look in his eyes that Neil tried to decipher.

But before he could even ask what was wrong, Alexander walked out the door.

Immediately, Neil set down his freshly poured drink. He knew that Alexander’s bad mood had something to do with his wife. He was hoping that his son and Helen hadn’t gotten into a fight. But his fears were confirmed when he went up to the third floor balcony and found Helen crying.

With tears streaming down her face, Helen told her husband about Alexander being unreasonable and the threats that he made against Jess.

“And you know what the worst thing is, Neil?” she said and wiped her cheeks, but more tears kept coming. “I really think that Alexander is crazy enough for Olivia that he would actually do something awful to Jess.”

Neil took a seat beside his wife and took hold of her freezing hands. “Sweetheart, we need to have a talk with Alexander about all of this. We need to tell him that we don’t approve of Olivia and his relationship.”

Helen shook her head and pulled her hands out of his grasp. “No, we can’t,” she said sharply. “Confronting him directly won’t work. That has never worked in the past. Every time that we have tried to do that, he just does the opposite of what we tell him to do. He’s stubborn in that way.”
