When the Dead Still Call novel Chapter 342

Chapter 342: The Plan Unfolds

It was Miguel and Maxwell who had been deep in conversation.

They were at work when Emery’s call came through, her voice trembling as she told them that the two of them had been involved in a car accident. Without hesitation, they dropped everything and rushed to the scene.

This wasn’t the first time Gianna’s name had come up in an emergency. Sometimes it was a crash, sometimes she felt unwell. But this time, the situation sounded far more serious — she had been taken to the hospital, and the tone in Emery’s voice sent a chill down their spines.

When they learned that Gianna had been injured because she pushed Emery out of harm’s way, their hearts sank even further.

Both men were utterly convinced that Gianna was the kindest soul on earth.

“Miguel, Maxwell, I’m okay,” Gianna insisted weakly, her voice fragile. “As long as Mom is alright, that’s all that matters.”

She kept up the delicate, vulnerable act flawlessly.

Of course, dying in this accident was never part of the plan. Everything had been carefully orchestrated by Regina.

They were staging a real injury this time.

To make the scene authentic, they had hired a driver to actually strike her.

To add to the drama and fear, Gianna had concealed blood packs on her person.

When the car “hit” her, she burst the packs, smearing herself with fake blood.

The sight was horrifying — she was covered in blood, looking as though she had suffered a terrible injury. But beneath the theatrics, she was genuinely hurt.

Her body bore cuts and bruises, and a sharp burning pain radiated from her right foot — likely broken.

Just then, Emery walked in and overheard Gianna’s words.

“Silly girl,” she said softly, her eyes filling with concern. “You say you’re fine, but your foot is broken, and you’re covered in cuts. The doctor says you’ll need a long time to recover.”

Her heart warmed unexpectedly. She hadn’t imagined that her adopted daughter would risk her life for her like this.

Any lingering resentment she might have held toward Gianna melted away completely.

All that remained was a deep ache and overwhelming guilt.

Those women who envied her weren’t wrong — this adopted daughter was a hundred times better than a biological one.

Gianna had almost been seriously hurt, yet her real daughter hadn’t even called to check on her.

“Mom, I’m really okay,” Gianna reassured her, forcing a small smile despite the pain. “I’ll be better in a few days. I’m young, I recover quickly. I’m just so glad you’re alright.”

“Silly girl,” Emery replied, shaking her head gently. “Youth doesn’t make you invincible. The doctor said you need at least three months to heal properly.”

“Promise me you won’t do something reckless like this again. We all need to stay safe, okay?”

Emery’s words struck a chord deep inside her. The cold distance that had existed between them moments ago had completely vanished. Now, she truly cared for Gianna.

“The doctor also said you need to stay under observation in the hospital for two days. I’ve already told your dad. He’s taking time off and is on his way here.”

“All the family has heard about this. They all think you’re incredibly brave and selfless, Gianna. Let’s see who dares to say anything bad about you now!”
