Chapter 42 The Game Begins

Amelia stood outside the ICU for a moment. Just as she was about to turn around, she saw Jeremy walking toward her with two cups of coffee.
“Amelia.”
She shot him a glare. “Did I say you could call me that?”
Jeremy leaned close to her car and whispered, “Oh? Then should I call you Dr. Ace?”
His warm breath brushed against her car, and her cheeks instantly turned red.
“Shut up!”
Jeremy smiled. “So you really are the famous Dr. Ace. Took me forever to find you.”
Amelia rolled her eyes. “Didn’t I come knocking on your door myself to detox you?”
Jeremy’s eyes darkened slightly as he handed her the coffee. “Then that’s fate, isn’t it? The one I’ve been looking for was beside me all along.”
Amelia took the coffee and scoffed. “Don’t start that. It was just a coincidence for me to step in.”
Jeremy chuckled softly. “Then tell me, why you? And why me?”
The flirtatious tone made her heart skip a beat.
She stepped back and tried to act calm. “Mr. Curran, we’re in a public place.”
“Relax,” he said with a smirk. “I know my limits.”
Just then, his phone started ringing. He glanced at the screen, the corner of his lips curling into a cold smile.
“Why aren’t you answering?” Amelia asked, puzzled.
“They probably heard the news that Dr. Ace showed up,” he said casually. “They’re trying to test me.”
“What? They?” Amelia’s face grew serious. “You mean the ones who poisoned you?”
Jeremy switched his phone to silent mode. A sharp glint flashed in his eyes. “Exactly. Them.”
Amelia frowned and lowered her voice. “So you already know who it is?”
“Just a guess,” he said lightly. “No proof yet. But now, the fish are biting.” He waved the phone slightly.
He suddenly leaned closer again, his voice warm against her ear. “So, Dr. Ace … will you keep protecting your patient?”
Amelia’s face flushed bright red. She straightened her back, pretending to be stern. “Mr. Curran, please keep a safe distance.”

Jeremy chuckled in a low voice. “Alright.”
I’m going to check on Aunt Thea’s recovery,” she spoke shyly, then hurried off before he could tease her again.
Jeremy watched her walk away, a faint smile tugging at his lips.
He glanced at his still–vibrating phone, his expression turning cold. “Ready?” he murmured. “The game begins now.”
The next day, Thea’s condition improved.
She was moved out of the ICU and into a private VIP room Amelia arranged so she could rest peacefully.
In the hospital room, Thea had just woken up.
When she saw Amelia walk in, she weakly lifted her hand. “Amelia … ”
Good. At least they wouldn’t disturb Aunt Thea’s recovery.
