When the Dead Still Call novel Chapter 6

Chapter 6: Dirty Tricks

Maxwell’s expression darkened instantly, his fists tightening so fiercely that his knuckles cracked audibly. His entire body seemed poised to spring forward, as if he might just slap Amelia right then and there.

“Amelia! Watch your tongue! Just because someone’s got your back now doesn’t mean you can act all high and mighty!” he growled through clenched teeth, his voice thick with anger.

Amelia snorted derisively, fixing him with a look of pure contempt. “What’s the matter? Getting all worked up? Is this how the Nygards raise their kids?” she sneered, her tone dripping with scorn.

Gianna stood nearby, watching Maxwell get roasted, completely at a loss for words. Tears pricked at her eyes as she gently tugged on his sleeve. “Maxwell, let’s just go. Maybe Amelia’s having a bad day…” she suggested softly, hoping to diffuse the tension.

Maxwell shot Amelia a fierce glare, his eyes blazing. “Gianna, don’t listen to her! She’s nothing but an ungrateful brat. We’ve cared for her all these years, and now she not only spits in our faces but has the audacity to defy us!” His voice was sharp, filled with hurt and disbelief.

Gianna hesitated, glancing nervously at Amelia before speaking. “Amelia, did you really get yourself a sugar daddy? Is that why you suddenly have money? How could you do something so shameful? If Mom and Dad found out, they’d be devastated!” Her words were laced with judgment, but also a hint of disbelief.

Tracy, standing nearby, was boiling inside and wanted to jump in, but Amelia cut her off with a cold glance.

Turning to Gianna, Amelia’s eyes flashed icy. “Gianna, you sure know how to talk. Say whatever you want. And if you’re jealous, I can get you one too.” Her voice was sharp, unapologetic.

Gianna’s body trembled with fury. “You… you’re shameless!” she spat, her voice trembling with rage.

But Amelia simply ignored the outburst. She swiped her card smoothly and signed the receipt with an air of finality. “Pack it up and send it to this address, please,” she instructed the store staff without looking back.

She quickly jotted down Jeremy’s house address, then turned toward them once more, her eyes hard and unyielding. “Next time you see me, you’d better stay far away. Don’t bark at me like some mad dog, or I won’t be so polite.”

With that, she and Tracy walked away, their steps confident and full of purpose.

Even Tracy couldn’t help but give Amelia an approving thumbs-up. Now that was a boss move.

Gianna’s face drained of color, her usual confidence shattered. She had always been the pampered daughter of the Nygards—when had she ever been humiliated like this before? It was unthinkable.

She vowed to tell Mom and Dad as soon as they got home. This had to be addressed.

As for Amelia, there was no way she could return to the Nygards now. From this moment forward, Gianna would be the only daughter in the family.

Leaning weakly on Maxwell’s shoulder, Gianna’s voice trembled with fake tears. “Maxwell, why has Amelia changed so much? Does she hate me? Maybe I should leave the family… even though I don’t want to.”

Maxwell pulled her into a hug, his heart aching for her. Don’t be sad, Gianna. She’s just an ungrateful brat! Let’s go home and tell Mom and Dad. She’s fallen so low—having a sugar daddy is disgraceful. Our family doesn’t need someone like that embarrassing us.

Gianna lowered her head, but a sly, satisfied smile tugged at the corners of her lips.

The two of them headed home soon after.

Meanwhile, Amelia was nearly finished with her shopping.

Tracy looked at her with concern and asked politely, “Ms. Amelia, those two were talking nonsense. Want me to deal with them?”

They had crossed the line by accusing Amelia of having a sugar daddy.

Did they even realize who was really backing her?

“No need. I’ll handle it myself. Don’t worry,” Amelia said calmly, her voice steady and unbothered.

After all, the line had already been crossed; there was nothing left to fear. It only spoiled her mood for a while.

Back at the Nygards estate, Maxwell and Gianna were close in age, which made them get along well.

Whenever Gianna went out, she dragged Maxwell along and made him pay for everything.

And Maxwell didn’t mind one bit. He loved spoiling her.

Maxwell had always been passionate about fashion and was exceptionally good at styling.
