Zebulon was struck speechless on the other end of the line.
While this wasn't the first time Naomi had stood up to him, a departure from her usual compliance, it was in this moment that he truly grasped the problem between them.
Something was very wrong.
Naomi was acting very, very wrong.
In the past, even when she was being difficult, she ultimately did everything he said.
That was why everyone made fun of her, thinking she would never get angry no matter what he did.
That day, Zebulon had wanted to test her.
If Naomi was willing to do something that humiliating, it would prove that she truly, deeply loved him.
Zebulon's test had given him the result he wanted, which had reassured him.
He had assumed they would naturally continue their ambiguous relationship until marriage, but then Naomi changed.
Zebulon was furious.
He didn't understand what had caused her sudden shift. If she was unhappy, she should have shown it then and there, not embarrassed him later.
Zebulon now felt a strange disconnect. He believed that if Naomi had passed his test, they could move forward, but instead, that very test seemed to have driven her away.
He didn't get it, and he couldn't bring himself to ask why.
"Naomi, are you coming to my birthday party or not?"
Zebulon decided there was no point in arguing like this. They could talk things through face-to-face.
Perhaps he had been too harsh in the past. He had specifically chosen a yacht for his party this time. He could take Naomi onto the deck where no one would bother them. With the sea breeze, she would surely feel at peace.
Then he would offer a small apology, and everything would blow over.
Zebulon's plan was perfect in his mind, but he had no idea Naomi wasn't planning to go at all.
