Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 126

For so long, Naomi had thought she'd finally excised the part of her that ached for Zebulon, that it wouldn't hurt anymore. But hearing him say those words, her heart throbbed with a familiar pain.

She couldn't bring herself to refuse.

"I'll do my best to clear my schedule."

Maybe, she thought, she should go for one last goodbye.

Since Zebulon was with her at the beginning, it seemed fitting for her to be with him now, at a more formal occasion, to celebrate one last birthday and then close that chapter of her life for good.

"Not 'do your best.' You have to clear your schedule!"

Zebulon was as domineering as ever, and Naomi had to admit he was frighteningly perceptive of her emotions, instantly sensing her resolve waver.

Naomi hesitated for a moment before finally saying, "I know."

Only then did Zebulon hang up, satisfied.

Naomi stared at her phone screen, an unidentifiable feeling churning inside her.

Her phone buzzed again. Assuming it was Zebulon, she didn't check it right away.

She turned on her computer, finished the work at hand, and then finally glanced at her phone.

She realized the message was from Lennon.

[Are you free now?]

A wave of panic washed over Naomi. She quickly typed a reply to Lennon, then grabbed some clothes, wanting to change.

[I'm done with work.]

Those few words seemed to drain all her energy.

She belatedly realized that she felt a pang of regret.

She should have checked the new message right away.
