A loud crash shattered Naomi's thoughts. She looked up, annoyed, to see Tiffany, eyes red, scrambling to pick up the shards of a broken cup from the floor.
"I'm sorry, my hand slipped."
Zebulon was already on edge. The sound of shattering porcelain had sent a sharp pain through his temples. He was even more irritated that Naomi had shown zero reaction to his public displays of affection with Tiffany.
He snapped at Tiffany, "I told you not to do things you're not capable of. You're making it look like I'm mistreating you."
"Don't bother cleaning it up. Have Naomi do it."
At the mention of her name, Naomi's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Me?"
Zebulon glared at her. "What, you feel wronged?"
Naomi had no intention of arguing with him. He had, after all, been injured while protecting her. She wasn't going to deny that or get into the root cause of the accident. He was almost better anyway, and her daily hospital visits were about to end.
She closed her laptop, stood up, and went to sweep the broken pieces.
Tiffany watched her with a hint of malicious glee. "I'm so sorry, Naomi. It's all my fault for being so clumsy."
Naomi glanced at her but didn't reply.
Tiffany's lip trembled, and she looked at Zebulon, expecting him to defend her.
Zebulon's expression was grim. He vented his frustration on Naomi. "Tiffany is talking to you. Are you deaf?"
Naomi dumped the shards into the trash can. The rattling sound seemed to echo her own discontent. Instead of her usual meek compliance, she put the dustpan away and said softly, "If you have a problem with my attitude, you can take it up with my parents."
Zebulon froze.
Just moments ago, he had been mocking Naomi for tattling, and now she was suggesting he do the same. And he would have to do it after bringing Tiffany here, a direct violation of the promise he'd made to his parents. If they found out, he'd be in serious trouble.
He had sworn to them he would stop seeing Tiffany. But thinking he was far from their watchful eyes, he had grown complacent.
And now Naomi was threatening him?
Zebulon was so angry he actually started to laugh.
