Patricia understood instantly.

Zebulon and his friends were two years ahead of Naomi, now in their senior year. Those rich kids had always complained about their impending “imprisonment” in the family business, so they were determined to party hard during their junior and senior years.

Patricia knew they had thrown dozens of parties already, living a life of pure indulgence.

Naomi used to be part of that crowd, always tagging along, which meant she had to cram her studies into whatever spare time she could find.

Now, even though Naomi wanted to cut ties, as long as she was on campus, she wouldn’t be able to avoid them if they sought her out.

Getting an internship was the perfect way to create distance.

“I support you. But we’re only sophomores; it’s going to be hard to find an internship in our field. Have you thought about that?”

“It’s fine,” Naomi said. “I’m not in it for the money. I just need something to do, preferably something that doesn’t require me to be on campus often.”

They all moved in the same social circles, and Naomi knew that despite what had happened, it would be difficult for her to turn down future gatherings.

She wouldn't be able to avoid family functions either, not when their families were all so closely connected.

Her only way out was to have a valid excuse, and an internship was perfect. Her parents would never object to it.

This way, she could have some peace for the next year. By the time that year was over, Zebulon and his friends would have graduated. They would either take over their family businesses or be sent abroad for a prestigious foreign degree, and their paths would cross even less.

With time, their connections would fade, and Naomi, the little shadow who used to follow Zebulon everywhere, would be forgotten.

It was the best possible outcome.

“I’ll do it with you!”

Patricia’s words made Naomi’s eyes well up. “You don’t have to…”
