Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 46

“Dearie, if you ever need anything, remember to call me. I do housekeeping on the side, too.”

Naomi nodded, and after exchanging contact information with the caregiver, she and Patricia headed back to the university.

Finally back in the familiar comfort of her dorm room, Naomi collapsed onto her bed, not wanting to move. Patricia did the same, and they decided to order takeout.

Naomi remembered she should probably let Lennon know she’d been discharged, so she opened their chat.

The last message was still the record of the money transfer she had sent him, which had been returned because he never accepted it.

Naomi: [Hi Lennon. Have you been busy these last couple of days?]

She assumed he had been too busy to accept the money for her medical bills. But from Lennon’s perspective, it looked like she was asking why he hadn’t visited the hospital.

It wasn't that he didn't have time. He just remembered how she had been and worried his presence would make her feel more awkward, so he had stayed away. In reality, he had been getting daily updates on her condition from the caregiver.

But the caregiver hadn't had a chance to tell him about her discharge yet.

Lennon: [A little. What’s up?]

Behind the screen, away from his intimidating presence, Naomi felt much more at ease and could chat with him naturally.

Naomi: [I’ve been discharged! You never accepted the money I sent you for the medical bills. Did you forget?]

Lennon paused. He hadn’t expected her to be out so soon.

He started to type a message asking why she was in such a hurry to leave, but then he remembered Zebulon was still at the university, and he deleted it.

Instead, he simply replied: [Don’t worry about it. It wasn’t much.]

Naomi quickly typed back: [I can’t do that. How about I treat you to dinner?]

She hated being indebted to people and immediately started thinking about which upscale restaurant to book.
