The words Naomi had been about to say caught in her throat.
“What’s wrong? Have you been waiting long? I’m sorry, I ran into a business partner and got held up…”
Lennon explained, and maybe it was just because it was over the phone, but his voice sounded incredibly gentle.
Naomi hadn’t felt like crying when Zebulon and Tiffany were humiliating her, but hearing Lennon’s kind voice now, tears immediately welled up in her eyes and began to fall.
She sniffled softly.
Though it was a tiny sound, Lennon heard it.
“What happened?” he asked, his voice now tinged with urgency. “Are you in trouble?”
“Naomi, talk to me.”
Hearing the concern in his voice, Naomi pushed down her own feelings and said quietly, “It’s nothing, I just ran into some annoying people. Can we eat somewhere else?”
“It can be my treat.”
She didn’t tell him about Zebulon.
Zebulon and his friends had never liked Lennon, and if they knew she was with him, they would probably start harassing him too.
Lennon already had a tough time in their social circle; the last thing he needed was Zebulon and his crew making his life even harder.
Naomi’s heart was heavy with worry, and her resentment toward Zebulon grew even stronger.
“Okay.”
Lennon was a gentleman. Even though he knew something was wrong, he went along with her request.
“I’ll let my associate know, and I’ll be right there. Wait for me in the car.”
Naomi breathed a sigh of relief.
