Patricia lay sprawled on the bed, barely catching her breath. Each inhale was sharp, every exhale mixed with a weak cough.
Mr. Padilla slipped out of bed, his bathrobe tied loosely, and poured her a glass of warm water. He leaned in, steadying her with one arm, and held the cup to her lips. “Here, drink a little.”
She coughed, trying to sip. He smiled. “Take your time. No one’s rushing you.”
Then he gathered her gently into his arms, his hand moving in slow circles on her back.
Patricia murmured, sounding half-asleep, and just flopped there on the bed.
“Want to take a shower?” he asked.
She shook her head. “I’m too tired.”
“How about I carry you to the sofa, change the sheets, then bring you back?” His voice was soft, patient.
“Alright,” she said, almost in a whisper.
Oliver always had more patience for these little things. She couldn’t remember ever changing the sheets herself after a night like this. Same with the baby—those late-night feedings? She only got up a handful of times. It was always Mr. Padilla who handled it, even after a packed day at work. He’d come home, take over, and settle in with the baby.
People called him a model husband, and honestly, they weren’t wrong.
Fresh sheets felt amazing. Patricia rolled onto her side, finally comfortable.
“Do you want to check on the baby?” he asked.
The bedroom was dark now. They used to leave a lamp on, but after Patricia gave birth, that stopped. Oliver couldn’t sleep well with the light, and honestly, that faint glow always set a mood they probably didn’t need right now.
Oliver pulled her close, his voice steady. “No need.”
“I just... I’m a little worried,” Patricia said quietly.
“If the nanny hasn’t come to get us, everything’s fine. Don’t overthink it. Try to rest.”
“But...”
He grinned. “If you’ve still got energy, we could always go again.”
