Mr. Padilla might have been simmering with frustration, but that didn’t stop him from heading straight for his daughter.

Marian, standing nearby, handed Patricia a bowl of bird’s nest soup with a gentle smile. “He really is a good dad, you know.”

“When they’re little and clingy, it’s the toughest. You can’t reason with them, you can’t explain anything.”

“Last time the Padilla family visited, everyone said he looked like he’d lost a ton of weight.”

Patricia glanced at his back as he walked away, thinking, It’s true—whoever takes care of the baby ends up losing weight.

In the living room, Oliver was cradling his daughter, murmuring softly to calm her down. He patted her back and carried her toward the dining room.

“What’s wrong, sweetheart? Daddy’s here.”

“Why are you crying like that, huh?”

“Don’t tell me you figured out Daddy tricked you last night?”

Patricia couldn’t help letting out a quiet laugh.

She had to admit, Oliver really was a good dad, but he looked so trapped. She actually felt a little sorry for him.

She was still shaking with laughter when Oliver shot her a look.

The baby’s cries slowly faded, replaced by a little cough. She barely managed two coughs before Oliver rushed to grab some tissues from the box. But before he could even wipe her mouth, she let out a loud wail and spit up a mouthful of milk all over his suit.

Warm milk trickled down from his jacket straight to his white shirt.

Patricia shot up from her chair, startled.

Mr. Padilla kept holding the baby, his soothing words coming faster. “Shh, sweetheart, did crying make your tummy hurt?”

“No more tears, baby, no more tears.”

Once she was done spitting up, the little girl curled up on Oliver’s shoulder, sniffling. She looked so soft and pink, her big eyes wet and shiny, still holding back tears.

Patricia’s heart just melted. “Let me hold her.”
