The old man was getting up there in age, and honestly, putting him through more stress would only wear him down faster. Now, with that worry out of the way, nobody really cared about saving face anymore.
Grace understood perfectly well that her oldest son still needed Miles’s support if he wanted to get ahead. She couldn’t risk ruining that relationship. So, even if she wasn’t thrilled, she’d force a smile and say something nice when she had to.
That night, after all the guests had cleared out, the little girl was worn out. She slumped against her dad’s shoulder, mumbling “Daddy” every so often.
Miles was deep in conversation with Oliver when he heard his granddaughter call for him. He gave her a gentle pat on the back.
As soon as he stopped, she called out again.
Mr. Padilla patted her back once more, letting her know he was still there.
She kept calling out, again and again.
By the fourth or fifth time, Miles just sighed. “Why don’t you answer her?”
“If I do, she’ll never quit,” Oliver said, almost laughing. “I’ve learned my lesson. When she’s sleepy and starts calling you, you can’t answer. If you do, she wakes up, and then it takes forever to get her back to sleep.”
Miles shook his head. “Who does she get that from?”
“Not me, and definitely not Patricia.”
Miles just gave him a look.
The little girl kept calling out, her voice getting softer as she drifted off. Oliver ignored her completely. Soon enough, she was fast asleep.
Once she was totally out, Oliver handed her over to Patricia. “Take her to bed. I’m going to talk with Dad and my brothers for a while.”
Patricia nodded and headed upstairs. They’d brought one of their three nannies with them this time, the one who always seemed to know what needed to be done.
As Patricia walked up with the baby, the nanny in the living room jumped up right away. “She’s asleep? Let me wipe her down a bit. If we try to give her a bath now and she wakes up, it’ll be a whole thing.”
“Thanks, really,” Patricia said.
