“How could she be having trouble adjusting? Maybe we just haven’t brought her back enough.” Their little girl was three now. Besides the occasional holiday visit, they mostly stayed in Riverdale. When she was younger, it never seemed to be a problem, so no one expected her to start having issues at three.

Mr. Padilla didn’t bother answering. He tugged the blanket up around Patricia and said, “Go to sleep. Stop overthinking.”

“But…” Patricia tried to protest, but Mr. Padilla just wrapped his arm around her waist, pulled her close, and pressed her head to his chest. That was his way of telling her to hush.

By now, their daughter could take care of herself. Early in the morning, she woke up and saw her parents cuddled together, fast asleep. They didn’t look like they’d be waking up anytime soon. She rubbed her eyes, sat up, and with tiny, careful fingers, poked Mr. Padilla’s cheek.

“Daddy,” she whispered, her voice soft and sweet.

Mr. Padilla blinked his eyes open, still half asleep.

“Daddy, I’m hungry…”

He covered Patricia’s ear with his hand and cleared his throat. “Go find Grandpa.”

It was six in the morning. The only one awake at that time was Miles. The youngest and oldest in the family were always up early, while everyone in between slept like logs.

“Daddy, take me,” the little girl pleaded.

“Go by yourself,” he mumbled.

“Daddy!” Her voice wobbled, almost about to cry.

Mr. Padilla was wiped out and in no mood to argue. “If you wake your mom up, I’ll spank you.”

She’d dragged everyone to the hospital last night. After her shot, she slept the whole way back, but now she was wide awake while he was still exhausted.

The little girl glanced at her mom, still sleeping soundly, then quietly climbed out of bed. She opened the door, grabbed the railing, and made her way down the stairs one step at a time.

Miles was just about to head out for his morning walk when he heard a tiny voice from the stairs.
