A parent’s love for their child definitely changes with time. Oliver used to think that wasn’t true. Now he knows better.
Once his daughter hit two, walking turned into running and life got a lot more interesting. She just couldn’t stay put at home anymore. Instead, she started showing up at his office like she was the boss. The whole Pacific Capital crew ended up at the mercy of this tiny dictator in diapers.
She’d swipe important documents off desks the second someone looked away. One time she got obsessed with the office printer, wedging her little hands in and jamming it right in the middle of a print job. And if she spotted a handsome young guy, she’d climb right into his lap and refuse to budge.
Oliver worried she was distracting everyone from their work. He also worried people would say he was spoiling her. Every time she showed up, he’d try to lure her away and hand her off to Patricia. Luckily, the Martin Group wasn’t far, so the hand-off was easy.
As for Patricia, the years had worn her down. She used to be patient and calm. Now she had a temper and would roar at Hope so loud the whole house could hear her. When she was at her wit’s end, she’d pass Hope to Maggie.
Maggie only lasted a few days before she was completely worn out and had to go to the hospital. Thank goodness for Chelsea, who could actually keep up with Hope. Patricia, running on empty, could barely keep up with all of Hope’s energy. But Chelsea was a night owl, used to pulling all-nighters in the lab. Sleep? Optional. Early mornings? Bring it on.
Chelsea could wake up at four in the morning, grab Hope, and go hiking to catch the sunrise. Patricia couldn’t even imagine it. Oliver could, but he didn’t like leaving Patricia behind. Chelsea would even take Hope to the lake and fish all day. Again, something Patricia just couldn’t manage.
Ever since having Hope, Patricia got sick all the time, especially when the seasons changed. She was always coming down with something, taking medicine, getting a little better, then catching another cold a few weeks later. Every time she saw the doctor, it was just a regular flu, but the pattern still worried everyone.
