"But in the end, after thinking it through, I still chose Elvis."
Winona smiled. "Dad, what's done is done. Let's not dwell on the past."
Victor nodded. "You're right. Still, turning down the Quincy family must have ruffled some feathers. Especially since, after I refused them, I agreed to an alliance with the Rogers family—those two have been at odds for years. Now, to the Quincys, it must look like we've picked a side and decided to stand against them."
Victor had never meant to make enemies of the Quincys, but now that things had come to this, the Thornes weren't looking for trouble—though they certainly weren't afraid of it.
"This year's business summit—besides us, the Rogers, the Quincys, and the Whitlocks are all bound to get invitations."
The four leading families of the city would each be sending their own representatives to the conference.
"Don't worry," Winona said. "If anything unexpected comes up, I'll handle it."
Victor offered a reassuring nod. "I doubt there'll be any real trouble. The Quincys will probably send their eldest son—he's known for being level-headed and mature. Whatever happens, he'd never stoop to something petty at an event like this."
Winona wasn't so sure about the Quincy heir; she didn't really know him that well. But suddenly, another face flashed in her mind—Jude. Jude definitely seemed like the type who'd try to pull something behind the scenes.
After chatting a while longer, father and daughter retreated to their own rooms for some rest.
Winona picked up her phone and saw a new message from Elvis.
"Did President Thorne mention the business summit to you?"
"He did," Winona replied. "Dad wants me to represent the Thorne Group."
"Great. We'll go together next week, then."
It didn't surprise Winona; Elvis would surely be representing the Rogers Corporation.
"Sounds good."
Elvis had just finished texting Winona when another message popped up—this one from Jeremiah.
"For sure!"
Right after sending that, Winona fired off a list of places, one after another.
"I visited these spots when I was a kid and loved them. I've been thinking about going back for years—now's the perfect chance. I wonder how much they've changed."
A smile tugged at the corners of Elvis's lips. "Alright. I'll take you, and we'll explore together."
Stretched out on her bed, Winona scrolled through her phone, her legs swinging idly as she grinned at the screen.
"But I'm not sure I can still make it to the top of that mountain."
"No problem. If you get tired, I'll carry you."
"Really? That hike isn't as easy as it looks, you know."
