After a short while, Winona suddenly noticed something about Elvis—something in his body had changed, unmistakably so.
Her eyelashes fluttered, and then, without warning, she bit his lip.
Elvis sucked in a sharp breath.
"You're ruthless," he said with a helpless laugh.
"Well, you…" Winona trailed off, at a loss for words, so she gave his thigh a gentle pinch instead.
Elvis sighed. "Winona, I'm only human, you know."
The truth was, he'd felt a reaction before when they kissed—he'd just managed to keep it under control. This time, though… he really was losing it.
Winona blinked up at him, then suddenly kissed him again, her lips finding his.
Her unexpected boldness nearly snapped the last thread of Elvis's self-restraint. Just as he was about to take charge and deepen the kiss, Winona abruptly pushed him away and hopped off his lap.
"I'm going to pick out a dress!" she said, a mischievous grin lighting up her face, and skipped off toward the stairs like a triumphant little cat.
Elvis watched her retreating figure, both amused and exasperated.
That little troublemaker.
She was teasing him on purpose.
He tried to tamp down the heat swirling in his chest, but today, his composure had completely abandoned him. In the end, he had no choice but to take a cold shower.
Afterwards, he changed into some comfortable clothes and made his way to the walk-in closet on the second floor. He rapped gently on the door.
"Come in," Winona called from inside.
Elvis stepped in and saw her standing before the full-length mirror, already dressed in a blue ombré gown that shimmered as if the whole ocean had been gathered and poured into the fabric.
"You look stunning," Elvis couldn't help but say.
Winona turned back with a smile. "I just tried on a few dresses, but I think this one's my favorite."
The warmth of his breath brushed her hair, carrying the fresh scent of his recent shower.
Winona looked at him in the mirror. The man's eyes were soft, his arms encircling her waist, the intimacy of the gesture unmistakable.
"What do you think?" he asked.
"It's beautiful. And it matches my dress perfectly." Winona smiled. "I remember this jewelry set was auctioned off three years ago at Luminance Auction House, wasn't it?"
That auction had been a major event; she'd seen it on the news. The jewelry set was the star of the night, though the buyer's identity had never been revealed.
So it was Elvis all along.
"That's right," Elvis replied. "When I saw it, I just knew it was waiting for its true owner. And now, it's finally found her."
"Oh, come on, that's a bit much," Winona teased, though she couldn't hide the smile tugging at her lips.
"I mean it." Elvis met her gaze in the mirror, his eyes unusually earnest.
