As soon as Winona and Elvis stepped out of the club, a car pulled up to the curb before them.
Elvis reached over and opened the door for her, the invitation clear without a word.
"...Thank you," Winona hesitated for a moment, but slipped inside.
After all, Elvis had just done her a favor. If she refused even a ride now, she'd only come across as cold and ungrateful.
Great, now she owed him another favor.
She couldn't pay it back just yet, but at the very least, she could say thank you.
They slid into the backseat together. The driver silently pulled away from the curb, the city lights slipping past the windows. Winona spoke first. "Mr. Rogers, thank you for what you did back there."
"It was nothing," Elvis replied, his tone even.
But then, a thought struck Winona. Something didn't add up. "Why were you at that place tonight?"
Was Elvis also at the club this evening?
But Mr. Ford hadn't mentioned it.
For a fleeting second, something awkward flickered across Elvis's face.
But it was gone before Winona noticed.
"I was there too," Elvis replied smoothly. "A friend invited me out."
"Ah, I see." Winona nodded.
Maybe Mr. Ford didn't know Elvis was there. After all, Elvis didn't need to report his every move. She was being silly.
Seeing she hadn't caught on to anything, Elvis quietly exhaled in relief.
His phone buzzed—another message from his mother.
"Well? Did you find Nona?"
He texted back, "She's safe. She's with me now."
So even though his mind was a storm of words, all he replied was, "Okay."
"Oh, come on. Can't you type a little more than that?"
"Did you get in touch with Dr. Cross?"
"Not yet. I'll let you know the minute I do. He's probably off somewhere with no reception again. I just hope it's not dangerous. I've already sent someone to look for him, so don't worry."
"Alright."
When the conversation ended, Elvis glanced out the window and spotted a pharmacy up ahead. He immediately called out, "Stop here."
The driver hit the brakes and pulled over.
Winona turned to him, puzzled. "What's wrong?"
"Wait here for me," Elvis said, already reaching for the door.
