"Mom, don't worry. Dr. Cross is still safe right now." Elvis spoke in a low, steady voice. "But I need to go there myself."
"What?" Fiona's face drained of color; she immediately grabbed his wrist. "Elvis, if something happens to you—"
"Mom." He squeezed her hand. "I promise you, I won't let anything happen to me."
Fiona's eyes were red as she looked at her son. She knew Elvis had always been dependable, and he never broke a promise.
"I have to bring Dr. Cross back. I can't let anything happen to her."
……
Winona barely slept that night. Her dreams were a jumble of odd images, and when she woke up, she couldn't remember any of them clearly.
Except, maybe, Elvis had been there?
She must be losing her mind.
Still half-asleep, she groped for her phone on the nightstand and saw a text from an unfamiliar number.
"Where are you?"
No greeting, no signature. But Winona had a pretty good idea who sent it.
Most likely Tyson.
She'd blocked his number, so now he was texting from a new one.
Clearly, it was time to change her number—soon.
There was no chance she'd reply. Instead, she deleted the message without hesitation and opened WhatsApp, where she saw a new message from Jonah.
"Miss Thorne, do you have time for dinner tonight?"
Sent at just after five in the morning.
He's up early, she thought.
"Sure," Winona replied.
Jonah responded almost instantly: "Anything you'd like to eat?"
"I'll let you pick."
When she got back, he'd make sure she understood there were consequences for just up and leaving like this.
A knock sounded at the door.
"Come in."
Tyson looked up to see Celia step inside, carrying a steaming mug of coffee.
"Ty, thought you could use a coffee," she said softly, placing the cup on his desk.
Tyson rubbed his forehead. "Thanks."
"Oh, come on. You don't have to thank me," Celia replied with a light laugh. Her gaze flickered to Tyson's phone, catching the words "Where are you?" on the screen. For a split second, her eyes darkened.
Tyson took a sip of coffee, but his brows knit together. He didn't say anything, just set the cup aside.
Celia noticed immediately. "Ty, is something wrong with the coffee?"
"No, it's just that…"
