The next morning, after Fairfax left for work, Darleen would send someone to wake her. And if Fairfax went out at night, Darleen would find ways to torment Starla late into the evening.
But wasn't that just part of a wife's duties? Did she really have the audacity to complain?
"Tell them to let me go," Fairfax ground out, each word a struggle.
No one in Marina City had ever dared to treat him this way. It was a humiliating first. The moment she’d gotten in with Herbert, she’d grown bolder than he could have ever imagined.
At a wave from Garret, the bodyguards released him.
Fairfax staggered to his feet and wiped his mouth, his hand coming away bloody. He glared at Garret with cold fury. "I think you've forgotten something. She and I are not divorced. Do I need your permission to enter my wife's room?"
"Divorced or not, it's all the same, isn't it?" Garret replied smoothly. "I'd advise you not to take this marriage too seriously now. After all, you didn't when our lady did."
Back then, Starla had taken her vows seriously, fighting to preserve their marriage against opposition from all sides. Now, it was her turn not to care.
"She's the one who won't sign the papers now!" Fairfax's breathing was heavy with anger.
"Does it matter? Your marriage has always been a bit of a sham, hasn't it?"
A sham. So that was it. Starla was using her status as his wife to torment his family, but the actual duties of being a wife? That part was fake.
