A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 429

Frankly, Caden had always suspected Brinley was faking her depression, and Starla certainly thought so. But Fairfax had always insisted it was real. Every time Brinley had an 'episode,' he would rush over to the family manor, which would inevitably set Starla off. Round and round they went, until things spiraled into their current mess.

After some thought, Caden decided to call Fairfax again. Fairfax was just approaching the road leading to the manor when the call came through.

“What is it?” he answered, his tone sharp. He was clearly still angry about the Nexberg project. From his perspective, what his brother had just done was nothing short of a stab in the back.

“Have you noticed that Brinley hasn’t had an episode in a while?” Caden asked.

Fairfax said nothing.

“I mean, even with all the chaos Starla’s been causing, she’s been fine. Did she just forget to have an episode or what?” Caden couldn’t help but echo Darian's blunt words.

Fairfax’s expression soured. “What are you trying to say?”

“I’m saying I don’t think she’s sick.”

“Are you starting to sound like Starla now?” Fairfax shot back. Starla had always been suspicious of Brinley’s illness, and now Caden was joining in?

Fairfax's response sent a chill through Caden. He suddenly understood the profound sense of helplessness Starla must have felt whenever she tried to talk to him about his family. With an attitude like that, how could anyone get through to him? He bristled at any criticism of the Yelchins, whether it came from his wife or his best friend.

“Fine, fine, my mistake,” Caden said, giving up.

This was unbelievable. After everything that had happened, how could he still have such blind faith in his family?

Caden didn’t know what else to say. He ended the call, fuming.

Darian looked at him. “He didn’t believe you?”

“He doesn’t even believe Starla. Why would he believe me?”

“You shouldn’t have bothered,” Darian said.
