A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 476

Brinley instantly understood what he was thinking. Sniffling, she choked out, "Yes, I was forced. What other reason could I possibly have for doing something like this?" Her voice was thick with manufactured grief. "I was married to Faraday for so many years. Don't you know what kind of person I am?"

"Who forced you?" Fairfax’s tone grew heavy.

"Who else could it be?"

Brinley managed a bitter smile, and that single expression was all it took to cement Fairfax’s suspicion. "Starla forced you?"

So, he had thought of Starla. Given everything Starla had done recently, it was only natural to connect the dots back to her. This wasn't her fault, Brinley told herself. Fairfax had come to this conclusion on his own. She hadn't framed Starla in the slightest.

"Go on, keep misunderstanding,” she thought. “The more you do, the better. Let your anger fester until you two destroy each other.”

Brinley had been driven half-mad by Starla's relentless scrutiny. Ever since Starla had begun her campaign, she felt Fairfax had been far too lenient in dealing with her. Why? Was it because he still had feelings for Starla? Or was his anger and hatred not strong enough?

The latter seemed laughable. The entire Yelchin family had been tormented by Starla; how could he not hate her?

"Please, don't ask anymore," Brinley whispered, closing her eyes and letting tears stream down her cheeks.

Her silence was more damning than any confession, pushing Fairfax's rage to its absolute peak.

...

Back at the Yelchin estate, Starla had gone to bed right after Garret gave his report. She couldn't care less. Let them create chaos. The more, the merrier.
