"I can't believe it. She managed to twist that whole thing into her favor," Maggie muttered, disgusted. She wanted to curse again but decided it wasn't worth wasting her breath on someone like that.
A bitter smile touched Janina's lips. This, she supposed, was the difference between being loved and not being loved.
When you loved someone, everything they did was right. Even if they committed a terrible wrong, you would find an excuse to forgive them.
The police themselves had confirmed Yvonne staged the entire thing, yet Julius was still willing to give her a chance to explain.
But when it came to Janina? A single word from Yvonne was enough for him to condemn her without a hearing. If Janina explained, it was a lie. If she stayed silent, it was an admission of guilt.
Scenes from the past flashed before her eyes like a movie montage—the good, the bad, the happy, the sad. In the end, it all dissolved into a single, cold laugh.
"Let's go. It doesn't matter what he does anymore," Janina said, pulling Maggie away from the hospital.
Back at the villa, Janina started packing. She couldn't stand to spend another moment in that house. Maggie and Wendy came over to help her move. Melody had an audition for a small role in a TV show and couldn't make it. Janina told her to focus on her acting; when she got famous, Janina would be the friend of a star.
In truth, there wasn't much to move. Her friends were there mostly for moral support, just in case Julius came back and tried to stop her. But he was at the hospital with Yvonne and didn't have time to come home. The move went smoothly.
The new place was a two-bedroom apartment, close to where Maggie lived. The three of them cleaned the new apartment together, and by the time they had everything unpacked, it was six in the evening. When Melody finished her audition, the four of them went out for hot pot to celebrate Janina's rebirth.
After dinner, they all went their separate ways. Janina was in bed before ten. The lawyer had already drafted a new divorce agreement. Tomorrow, she would find Julius, get his signature, and finally end this disastrous marriage. From now on, they would go their separate ways.
The next morning, Janina woke up and got ready with brisk efficiency. Once she was dressed, she found Julius's number and called him. She wasn't sure if he was at the hospital or the office and didn't want to make a wasted trip.
