The difference between being loved and not being loved was so stark.
Janina resisted the urge to make a scene, choosing instead to deliver a single, sarcastic remark.
"Honey, you should take Miss Moore to her check-up. We wouldn't want anything to happen, or you'd just have to bring her back to the hospital again. You are a married man, after all. It wouldn't be good if people got the wrong impression."
Yvonne's eyes shifted, her long lashes hiding the emotion swirling within. She leaned even closer to Julius.
Janina was truly learning the power of the phrase 'shamelessness knows no bounds.'
Julius seemed to realize his actions had been inappropriate.
He shot Janina a cold look, a silent warning to watch her words.
Then he released Yvonne's hand, creating a little distance between them, and smiled fondly. "You're a grown woman, but you're still as clumsy as ever."
Yvonne giggled, giving him a playful look. "You haven't changed either. You've been overreacting every time I get hurt since we were kids. I'm not a child anymore. Look, you're making Janina jealous..."
As she spoke, Yvonne turned to Janina, her eyes crinkling into a sweet smile.
"Janina, don't get the wrong idea. This is just how Julius is. He's been taking care of me since we were young, it's a habit. You two have been married for a while, so you must know he tends to make a big deal out of nothing."
Was Yvonne trying to explain?
No. She was asserting her dominance.
Yvonne was telling Janina that the Julius she knew wasn't like this, but for Yvonne, he was different, special.
She even emphasized their childhood connection, making it clear that she was not only his old flame but also his childhood sweetheart.
Janina met Yvonne's smiling eyes, forcing a smile of her own, but her heart felt as though a gaping hole had been carved into it, letting an icy wind blow through.
Ignoring Yvonne's provocation, Janina turned her gaze to Julius. "Honey, remember to come home for dinner tonight." With that, she turned and walked away.
She held her back ramrod straight, as if that alone could hide how broken and defeated she felt.
