"That was too close," Janina said, her heart still pounding as they reached the obstetrics and gynecology floor.
"Who was that guy?" Maggie asked. She'd never met Darren but could tell Janina was trying to avoid him.
"A friend of Julius's."
"What a coincidence. Good thing he didn't find out," Maggie said. "If he's friends with Julius, who knows what kind of person he is…"
"Next time, I'm picking a different hospital to avoid running into anyone else," Janina said, glancing down at the report in her hand. She took a deep breath. "Let's go find the doctor."
They got a follow-up number and didn't have to wait long before Janina was called in.
Inside the doctor's office, Janina handed the ultrasound report to the female physician.
The doctor took the report, and as she read it, a look of surprise crossed her face.
"It's twins. And they're developing very well. We can already see the heartbeats and yolk sacs."
The doctor smiled, pointing at a dark shadow on the report with her pen. "See? Right here, that's where the babies are. They're tiny, do you see?"
Janina and Maggie both leaned forward. They had just heard the doctor say twins. What did that mean?
Janina's eyes fell to the report. At the bottom of the image, a line of text read:
"Two gestational sacs are visible within the uterine cavity, both showing embryonic structures, cardiac activity, and yolk sacs…"
"Doctor, are you saying… I'm pregnant with twins?" Janina asked, her voice filled with disbelief.
"Yes. You can see it written here, '2 gestational sacs,' and we can see two embryos right here on the image," the doctor said, pointing to the shadows again.
Janina had never imagined it would be twins. The doctor hadn't mentioned it at her last appointment.
Her mind reeled.
She subconsciously placed a hand on her lower abdomen.
For the past two years, she had tried everything to get pregnant.
She knew Julius rarely slept with her.
She had prayed that once would be enough. She'd seen doctor after doctor, forcing down countless bowls of bitter herbal remedies.
After all that effort, nothing had happened. And now that she was divorced, a baby—no, babies—had come.
