I opened my mouth, but she raised her hand to silence me.
“You came to the wrong person, Ethan. You played the wrong game,” she said, voice low but deadly. “And now you have to step back. Because you are choosing the wrong opponent. I’m not asking you to step back. I’m telling you that you need to step back. You must, and you have to. You can choose the synonym that you want to put in your mind, as long as you understand the concept.”
Her words hit like a blow, measured, controlled, and merciless.
“I didn’t mean for it to go like this, I didn’t mean for you to hear any of it. I did not mean for any of this to happen.” I tried again. “You’re not just anyone to me. I don’t pity you or feel sorry for you. If anything, it’s different.”
But she smiled then. Not gently. Not kindly.
That smile could break bones.
“I’m not the kind of woman who stands in a man’s shadow. I’m not the woman who would be running towards a man simply because he opened his arms for a hug. I’m not the kind who cries or begs or falls apart just because someone kissed her one night and walked away the next,” she whispered, her eyes locked on mine. “I’ve fought through hell. I’ve bled for my place. And I will never let someone like you reduce me to a mistake. I’m sorry, but I’m not that woman and I refuse to be.”
She stood slowly, her fingers brushing Lysandra’s blanket like she needed something to anchor her rage. She took a breath before looking gammy once more.
I took a step towards her, and she frowned, bracing herself to raise her hand. I grabbed her hand midair, stopping her before leaning into her ear.
“You can fight me all you want and push me away from you. But I’m going to win you back, even if it is the last thing that I’m going to do.” I whispered before taking a step back, letting her hand go. “I would recommend that you try and leave the room. You know, staying in here pretending that you’re not upset does not suit you.”
