**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time by Dael Rowan Sire**
**Chapter 100**

The moment I learned that the promotion I had been yearning for slipped through my fingers, I understood that my resignation no longer required Jaxson’s consent.

With a sense of finality, I made my way to HR, filled out the necessary forms, and just like that, my chapter at the company was closing.

As I prepared to leave, the HR director enveloped me in a warm embrace.

I returned the hug, a soft smile gracing my lips despite the turmoil within.

“Diana, thank you for always having my back over the years. I truly hope everything unfolds beautifully for you,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Before stepping out into the bustling world beyond the office walls, I made a request. “Please, don’t mention my departure to anyone just yet. I want to finish handing off my projects first.”

Diana was the only person in this entire company who knew the intricate details of my relationship with Jaxson, and I could see the understanding flash in her eyes. She nodded without a moment’s hesitation, her support a comforting balm to my frayed nerves.

As I left work behind, my phone buzzed insistently in my pocket. It was my nana calling.

“Sweetheart, did you get the promotion?” Her voice was laced with hope, and my heart sank.

“You promised that if you got it, I’d be the first to know,” she reminded me gently.

My throat constricted painfully, and I felt as if I were sinking into a pit of despair. My voice trembled as I spoke.

“Nana… I… I don’t want to stay in New York anymore.”

There was a brief silence on the other end, and I could almost hear her processing my words.

“Oh, honey, that’s wonderful! I’ve been so worried about you being so far away all these years,” she exclaimed, her excitement palpable.

“I’ve wanted to come home for so long,” I confessed, my heart aching at the thought of her warm kitchen and the comforting smell of her cooking.

“When are you coming back? I’ll make your favorites—pot roast, mac and cheese, apple pie…” Her voice flowed like a soothing melody, and I felt something inside me crack open.

The tears I had been holding back surged forth, and I couldn’t contain the sobs that escaped my lips.

Nana’s words were meant to comfort me, but deep down, I knew she had been proudly sharing tales of her granddaughter making it in the big city, the grand office building in New York a symbol of my success.

I had envisioned a future where I would finally bring Nana to the city, a celebration of my achievements. I’d work a few more years, scrimp and save until I could afford a down payment on a cozy little place that would finally feel like home—a space that was truly ours.
