**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time by Dael Rowan Sire**
**Chapter 101**
Just a week remained until my final day, and I was completely unprepared for Elara’s sudden appearance.
The moment I spotted her at the coffee shop, I could sense the storm brewing. She wasted no time, cutting straight through the pleasantries.
“You’re the fuck toy who’s been keeping Jaxson company for five years, right?” she shot at me, her voice sharp as a knife.
Before I could even begin to wrap my head around her accusation, she rummaged through her purse and produced a clear ziplock bag. My heart raced as I caught sight of what was inside—a single strand of light brown hair.
“I found this in the guest room at Jaxson’s place,” she declared, her eyes narrowing, filled with a mix of triumph and fury.
“I’ve been comparing it to every female employee since my first day at the company,” she continued, her voice gaining an edge of satisfaction. “Finally found the match.”
My mouth opened instinctively, words bubbling up in my throat, desperate to explain my side. But before I could utter a sound, a cold splash of iced coffee hit my face, sending shivers down my spine.
The icy liquid dripped down my cheeks, and the ice cubes tumbled down my shirt, hitting the floor with a dull thud.
Elara stood before me, her fury palpable, and in a swift motion, she slapped me hard across the face.
“You fucking homewrecker!” she screamed, her voice echoing in the crowded café.
I wiped the coffee from my face, a surge of anger igniting within me, and I was about to retaliate when my wrist was suddenly caught mid-air.
Looking up, I found myself ensnared by Jaxson’s intense gaze, dark and brooding. I noticed immediately that the ring which usually adorned his finger was conspicuously absent.
He turned to Elara, whose eyes were now red-rimmed and glistening with unshed tears, and spoke softly, “Get in the car. I’ll handle this.”
Elara sniffled, her voice trembling with emotion. “Jaxson, you asshole. We’d only been broken up for six months before you found someone else!”
His voice was steady but laced with an underlying tension. “If she hadn’t come to me today to rub it in my face, were you planning to hide this from me forever?”
With one last venomous glare directed at me, Elara stormed out, her heels clicking angrily against the floor.
Jaxson’s gaze returned to me, and the moment our eyes locked, an oppressive silence enveloped us, thick with unspoken words.
“Didn’t I tell you not to let her find out about us?” he said, his voice low and heavy with frustration.
I yanked my wrist free from his grip, my voice steady despite the storm brewing inside me. “She came to me first.”
**Chapter 101**
“I’ve been waiting here for someone this whole time,” I said, trying to maintain my composure.
His expression was skeptical, a clear indication that he found it hard to believe what I was saying.
I let out a cold laugh, the sound bitter on my tongue. “Mr. Cole, did you forget? Today’s the day YOU set up a blind date for me.”
With a quick glance out the window, I spotted a sleek Porsche Cayenne rolling up to the curb.
