**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time by Dael Rowan Sire**
**Chapter 29**

With an exasperated roll of my eyes, I swiftly deleted the message and, without a second thought, blocked that number as well.

All my focus and energy had become consumed by the need to care for Granitina. She needed me, and I was determined to be there for her through every step of her recovery.

Meanwhile, the school had published a list detailing the college destinations of all the students, a moment that should have been filled with excitement. I didn’t bother going back to collect my own copy. Zoe, bless her, filled me in with the details, mentioning that Damien hadn’t picked up his either.

It seemed that right after his graduation party, his father whisked him away to their company’s branch office out of state for some early business training. A part of me couldn’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment; I had hoped he might reach out, but instead, he had vanished from our class group chat without a trace.

It felt like he was deliberately severing any remaining ties with me, and honestly, I was okay with that.

As time passed, Granma’s treatment and recovery progressed remarkably well. By the time I was preparing to leave for college, she was back home, safe and sound.

I only spent a single night in the comfort of my home before the inevitable college journey began. My mom had taken the initiative to pack everything for me, making sure I had everything I might need.

The following day, she drove me to MIT for orientation, her excitement palpable.

During the entire trip, not once did I catch a glimpse of Damien.

To my surprise, college life turned out to be far less intimidating than I had anticipated.

As soon as I stepped out of the car, I was greeted by a swarm of upperclassmen vying for the chance to help me carry my belongings to my dorm. Their energy was infectious, and I felt a sense of belonging wash over me.

My roommates were a fantastic group of girls, each hailing from different corners of the country, and they welcomed me with open arms. It was comforting to know that all the female students in our major were housed in the same dorm, creating a tight-knit community.

Within just three days, they had whisked me around campus, introducing me to the best food spots and ideal study locations. I had initially worried about how I would adapt to New England cuisine, but to my delight, it was actually quite delicious.

On my first night, they even took me on a midnight Dunkin’ run through the lively streets of Harvard Square. As we bonded over iced coffee at 2 AM, I felt an incredible connection forming between us, almost as if we had known each other for years.

I was adjusting to the whirlwind of college life at an astonishing pace, and by the end of Orientation Week, I had received my third love letter. Just when I thought I was settling in, Damien’s voice echoed through my phone once again.

“Nova, I came by your house yesterday to see if you wanted to coordinate our move-in dates, but your mom said you’d already left for school.”

His voice sounded almost frantic.

“I’m here on campus now, but I can’t find your dorm or your classes anywhere. What’s going on? Are you at a different campus?”

I felt a wave of confusion wash over me. After all this time, he still had no clue that I hadn’t followed him to California.
