**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time**
**Chapter 30**
I wasn’t by myself when he showed up.
Standing beside me was a guy from my class, his nerves palpable. He was fidgeting, shifting his weight from one foot to the other, clearly anxious about something.
This guy was pretty cute—tall and athletic, the kind of guy whose name often popped up on the campus confessions page, usually in a flattering light. I had been curious about his lingering glances during dinner, wondering what thoughts were swirling in his mind.
“Hey, Nova,” he started, his voice wavering slightly. “Um, I’m Marcus—the guy who’s been sending you love letters and hasn’t heard back. I think you’re absolutely gorgeous, and I want to seriously date you. Like, really seriously. Would you maybe give me a chance to prove myself?”
With that awkward little speech, he thrust a fourth letter into my hands before practically sprinting away, leaving me in a state of bemusement.
Just as I was about to unfold the letter, a familiar voice broke through my thoughts. “Nova!”
Turning around, I found Damien standing there, his expression one of fatigue. He looked worn out, probably from traveling, yet his crisp white button-down and tailored dark slacks remained impeccably put together. Classic Damien—effortlessly handsome, even when he appeared to be unraveling.
The formal attire, coupled with the laptop bag slung over his shoulder, hinted that he had come straight from some business event, perhaps an important meeting. Despite having moved on, my heart still fluttered in his presence, a reminder of what once was.
“I need to talk to you. Can we find somewhere private to sit?” His voice was cautious, as if he feared I might refuse him.
“I have a dorm meeting tonight. We can talk here,” I replied, unwilling to let him dictate the terms. If Damien had flown all the way across the country to find me, he wasn’t leaving without saying his piece.
But then he caught me off guard with his opening line. “You guys have known each other for like three days, and he’s already asking you out? That’s obviously not serious. Stay away from guys who are just looking for a hookup.”
