**A Promise Written on the Rusted Edge of Time by Dael Rowan Sire**

Alden was surrounded by a lively group of friends, and there, amidst the laughter and chatter, was Madison. The sight of them together stirred a mix of emotions within me. Alden, effortlessly charming, held her designer bag in one hand while his other arm was possessively wrapped around her waist. They strolled at the back of the group, their closeness a stark contrast to the distance I felt from him.

Every time Madison leaned in to whisper something in Alden’s ear, I caught a glimpse of the way he would lower his head, his full attention on her. It was a tenderness that felt foreign to me, something I had never experienced. Not with him, not with us.

Auden, my friend, had always towered over me, and with each passing year, he seemed to grow even taller. I often found myself bouncing on my tiptoes, stretching my neck just to catch his eye, to share a moment. But now, it was painfully clear that for someone he truly cared about, he would go out of his way to meet them halfway. A pang of jealousy twisted in my stomach.

I inhaled deeply, trying to ground myself. I reminded myself that I needed to maintain some semblance of dignity. His life was no longer my concern. I could almost hear the inner voice urging me to stop overthinking every little detail. But as I watched them, it felt as though there was only one path leading to the gates, and I had no choice but to linger behind them, a shadow of what once was.

Eventually, we reached a fork in the terminal, a moment that felt heavy with anticipation. Aiden, who had been unusually quiet, began to fidget. His anxiety was palpable as he attempted to make several calls, each one going unanswered. The tension mounted as he stared at his phone, frustration etched across his face. Finally, in a fit of impatience, he borrowed a friend’s phone and stormed off toward the restrooms, his expression stormy and dark.

Just then, my phone buzzed in my pocket, the screen lighting up with an unknown number. My heart raced as I answered, bracing myself for what was to come.

“Brooklyn,” Aiden’s voice crackled through the line, laced with irritation. “You’re really committed to this silent treatment, huh? Not even going to reach out unless I make the first move? And blocking me? Real mature of you.”
