Kaitlyn finished posting bail at Ardelisse Police Station, her jaw tight from how much money she had just dropped. She looked at Johnny's unshaven face and felt her anger flare once more.

"Last night, you actually took Madison's side and kicked me out. You made me look pathetic in front of everyone! And who bailed you out in the end? Me! If I hadn't shown up, you'd still be stuck in a cell!"

Johnny kissed her cheek. "Come on, Kate. I was just putting on a show for that bitch. You're the one I love. I'd never pick her over you.

"Besides, she even called the police on me. She kept bragging she'd die for me, but then bailed the second things got messy!"

Kaitlyn frowned. "Something's off. Madison showed up at Oceanview Villa yesterday and kicked me out on the spot. She's the one who invited me to move in. Now she's turning on me like nothing. Did she figure something out?"

Johnny's expression hardened. If Madison had caught on, the plan they'd spent so long putting together to get their hands on the Quinn family inheritance was about to go up in smoke.

"That was already in the bag. No way it's slipping through our fingers. Give me your phone. Some asshole swiped mine last night," Johnny said.

Kaitlyn rolled her eyes, shooting him a withering look as she passed her phone over.

Johnny called Madison. The line kept coming up busy, and they got increasingly pissed off.

After a few minutes, Madison's voice finally came on the line, bright and clear. "Hello?"

Johnny and Kaitlyn let out a breath, but neither of them let their guard down.

Johnny spoke into the phone, careful and gentle. "Maddie, are you okay? Did last night scare you? I didn't know they were bringing that kind of stuff in. I don't even know those guys.

"Plus, I was stuck in lockup all day and all night. Why didn't you come see me?"

His voice came through the line with a wounded, wheedling lilt.

Madison used to fall for that. The moment he sounded even a little wounded, her heart would ache, but not anymore.

She toyed with the steak knife, idly jabbing it into her steak.

Then she let out a humorless laugh and adopted a caring tone. "Johnny, last night was way out of hand. Sam had me pinned down and wouldn't let me go anywhere. Hearing you're okay was a relief."

Johnny exhaled and shot Kaitlyn a contemptuous look.
