Back in Time to Fall for Him novel Chapter 17

Kaitlyn widened her eyes. Shaking her head in a rush, she cried, "Maddie, what are you talking about? How could Johnny possibly be my boyfriend?"

"Maddie, did someone say something to you?" she quickly added. "Don't believe them. Those are all lies. There's nothing between me and him, I swear."

As Madison watched Kaitlyn scramble to prove her innocence, a faint, mocking smile tugged at her lips.

"Is that so?" Madison asked lightly. "But Johnny drugged me. And you, my best friend, defended him instead of standing up for me. I figured maybe you two had something going on. It's the only reason you'd lose your sense of right and wrong like that."

By the end of her sentence, Madison's knowing gaze rested on Kaitlyn.

Kaitlyn's cheeks flushed crimson under the sting of that thinly veiled mockery. Her fingers clenched tightly around her handbag as she drew in a deep breath, forcing her anger down. When she finally spoke, her eyes were glassy with tears.

"I'm sorry, Maddie. I wasn't thinking about how you must've felt. Johnny really did go too far this time. Let's not talk about him anymore, okay? Didn't we say we'd go shopping? Come on."

As her words fell, she reached out, trying to take Madison's arm.

Refusing to let Kaitlyn touch her, Madison casually tossed her the car keys instead. "Fine, let's go. You drive," she said, her tone laced with authority.

With that, she turned and slid into the back seat, leaving Kaitlyn standing there with the keys in hand. Her jaw tightened as she recalled Madison's condescending behavior.

What was that supposed to mean? Was Madison treating her like a chauffeur?

But remembering her bigger plan, Kaitlyn swallowed her frustration and forced herself into the driver's seat.

Meanwhile, in the CEO's office at Goodwin Corp, Sam was staring at the document in his hand. However, his gaze kept drifting toward the phone nearby.

Minute after minute ticked by, but the phone remained silent.

His lips pressed into a thin line, and a flicker of self-mockery flashed in his deep-set eyes.

Of course. Every time Madison showed him concern, it was never without reason.
