Madison stared at the message she'd just sent, only to watch it sink into silence like a stone dropped into deep water. It wasn't hard to guess that Sam was avoiding her again.
Just as she was about to text him again and keep pestering him, that irritatingly familiar voice reached her ears. "Maddie, I didn't expect this dress to suit you so well. It really brings out your looks."
Kaitlyn approached with a practiced smile, but jealousy burned deep in her eyes—especially when her gaze swept over Madison's flawless skin. Her jaw tightened, and her teeth ground against her molars in resentment.
After all, she'd dragged Madison out to tan more times than she could count over the past two years. She'd even convinced her that she was young and didn't need skincare, and refused to let her put on sunscreen.
Yet, Madison's skin was still softer and finer than her own, despite all her meticulous care.
Hearing her voice, Madison turned her head and caught the flicker of malice in Kaitlyn's eyes.
She said with a hint of irony in her gaze, "I agree. I really don't know what I was thinking before, always dressing so plain. Anyone who didn't know better would've thought I was mourning someone."
Once upon a time, Kaitlyn had been jealous of her looks. She'd deliberately manipulated her, saying Johnny didn't like flashy women because such women couldn't stay faithful.
Madison had believed her. For years, she went without makeup and wore clothes so conservative they hid her figure completely.
Now, she was done with that. She'd wear whatever made her look her best.
For some reason, Madison's words made Kaitlyn's chest tighten with discomfort. It felt like Madison was mocking her, though she couldn't quite prove it.
Madison noticed the change in her expression and sneered inwardly. This was just the beginning, and she was already starting to slip.
With that thought, she told Kaitlyn she'd go check out the other pieces and walked away.
By the time Kaitlyn tried to stop her, it was too late. Madison was already talking to the sales assistants, picking out several pieces with exquisite designs.
Kaitlyn had no choice but to pretend to browse and grab a few new arrivals herself before urging Madison to leave. "Maddie, I'm done picking. Let's go check out the other stores."
"You want to go somewhere else? Sure. Why don't you take these to the counter for me and pay while you're at it?"
She pointed at the clothes she'd just chosen, smiling sweetly.
Kaitlyn froze. What the hell was she talking about? Since when had she ever paid whenever they went shopping together?
Still, with people watching, Kaitlyn forced a smile. "I can pay for them, sure. Just hand me your card."
Madison folded her arms and looked at her with a faint, knowing smile. Then, suddenly, she raised her voice.
"Hand over my card? What card? Kaitlyn, back when we were close, I didn't mind you taking my card to pay for things. But today, you're the one who made a mistake and came to apologize, yet you still expect to use my card. Isn't that a little insincere of you?"
The second she spoke, people around them turned their heads to look.
"That's not what I meant, Maddie. Don't talk nonsense!" Kaitlyn hissed in panic as the eyes around them fell on her.
