Simon caught the unspoken warning in Sam's tone, and his expression froze instantly.
Watching Simon cowed into silence by just a few words from Sam, Lydia Shriver cursed him inwardly for being useless. Still, she quickly spoke up for him.
"William, Sam really is your grandson, isn't he? His presence is just as commanding as yours was in your youth. It's such a shame he can't tell friend from foe."
In other words, Lydia was accusing Sam of turning against his own family to protect an outsider. That was what William resented most about him, and Lydia knew exactly where to strike.
As expected, William's face darkened even more. "Sam, show her out. She's not welcome here."
His tone left no room for discussion.
Sam met William's gaze, his voice cold. "In that case, we won't intrude on your family gathering."
With that, Sam took Madison's hand and turned to leave. She stared at him, moved. In both her past and present lives, he had never once wavered in standing by her. She couldn't help but smile.
William's furious roar thundered from behind. "Sam Goodwin! Did I say you could leave? Stop right there!"
William was so enraged that he struggled to breathe. Seeing this, Simon hurried to support him. "Dad, take deep breaths. Deep breaths!"
Simon stormed toward the doorway and yelled, "Sam, come back here! Do you want your grandfather to end up in the hospital?"
Sam stopped, frowning as he turned around. He saw William surrounded by his relatives, all looking concerned.
Madison stood calmly beside Sam, unfazed by William's condition. She had long since seen through William's cold-blooded nature. He only valued Sam because the latter outshone the rest.
