The atmosphere in the grand dining room turned to ice.
Ethan glanced at Simon, defeated once again, and silently shook his head. He had no intention of speaking up. He had already done that earlier and wasn't planning on doing it again.
However, Lydia was furious. Just as she was about to speak up, a gentle tug on her sleeve stopped her. She turned to see Ethan shaking his head subtly—signaling her to stay quiet.
Though still seething, she obeyed, glaring daggers at Sam instead.
After all, she knew her son's capabilities better than Simon ever could. Without Ethan, they wouldn't even be able to manage their current subsidiaries, and they would still be living off the family trust. Yet Simon naively thought it was all his doing.
But Ethan had told Lydia to let Simon believe that. It would help conceal Ethan's true abilities, keeping Sam and William off guard.
Yelena, watching the shifting expressions around the table, smoothly picked up a piece of fish and dropped it onto her son's plate.
"Eat," she said coldly. "You seem hungry, so eat up."
Her tone sounded like a scolding, but it was really to bail him out.
Realizing Yelena had given him a way out, Ethan immediately lowered his head and started eating quietly.
Satisfied, Yelena turned her gaze back toward Simon and Lydia, then smoothly changed the subject. "Sam, I heard you arranged for Ms. Quinn to work at headquarters."
The words had barely landed before both William and Simon frowned. Lydia pounced instantly, as if finding an opening. "Sam, not to be harsh, but have you forgotten what Madison did to betray you back then?"
Simon followed, wearing a grave expression as he looked at his nephew. "Sam, as your uncle, I must give you my opinion.
"The company is at a critical point, since you're trying to bid for Project ET. If anything goes wrong now, have you considered what damage that might cause Goodwin Corp?"
