Honestly, it sounded a bit like me and Gavin.

Eleanor noticed my confusion. “My son isn’t legally mine–so my grandson’s actual grandmother isn’t me, either.”

“You…” I vaguely guessed something but didn’t press further, trying to steer the conversation elsewhere.

Eleanor smiled wryly. “You were betrayed by infidelity in marriage. As for me… I was betrayed before there even was a marriage.”

“Back then, he had power, influence, a perfect public image. The moment the baby was born, I didn’t even get to see him before he was taken away–registered under his ‘real‘ wife’s name.”

It took me a moment to piece the story together. Decades ago, Eleanor had been betrayed by a lover, even before marriage.

That person was even more despicable than Zane.

Seeing my silence, Eleanor quickly added, “Don’t worry, my grandson didn’t inherit those inferior genes. Apart from being a bit reserved, he’s a very good man in every other way.”

I had to laugh. “You’re still thinking about setting me up with your grandson?”

“Of course!” Eleanor looked at me with clear satisfaction. “After your clinic shift, are you free this afternoon? I could arrange for you two to meet?”

“Grandma…”

“Just one meeting,” Eleanor said straightforwardly. “If you don’t like him, we’ll forget it. I’ll never bring it up again, okay?”

Eleanor was a very good person.

I thought it over and finally nodded. “Alright. But we agree–just one meeting, and that’s it.”

“Good!” Eleanor’s eyes immediately crinkled into a smile.

We spent the rest of the afternoon busy in the kitchen. After we ate dinner, the leftover pies took up most of the space in my freezer.

Maybe worried I’d get tired of them, Eleanor had specifically made three different flavors for me to alternate between.

I felt a little embarrassed. “Eleanor, I can’t possibly eat all these. Please, take some back with you.”
