Zane hesitated, unable to bring himself to complete the thought swirling in his mind. The uncertainty of what he might do next weighed heavily on him, leaving him frozen in place.
His hand, still resting firmly against the car’s surface, clenched into a tight fist, the sharp crack of his knuckles breaking the silence of the otherwise quiet parking lot. Just then, the unmistakable sound of heels clicking against the pavement grew closer.
Amelia, her heart pounding as she replayed Ella’s earlier revelations, fought to suppress a rising wave of anxiety. She quickened her pace, slipping up behind Zane and lightly poking him in the back. “Hmph. Finally remembered to pick me up from work, huh? Took you long enough.”
“Yeah.” Zane turned to face her, the storm that had once raged in his eyes now completely gone. “Done for the day?”
“Yep.” Amelia grabbed hold of his arm, leaning into him with a tired smile. “I’m exhausted. We were swamped with patients all morning.”
Honestly, she thought, I don’t know how Ella manages to handle that many patients on her own.
Zane’s gaze remained fixed on her, steady and analytical. “Did you manage to get the clover necklace back from Elara?”
“I did.” Amelia’s face lit up, and she tugged him gently toward his car. Then, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper, she added, “No clue what her problem was. She’s probably still bitter about that whole hotel incident. Can you believe she actually had the nerve to claim the necklace wasn’t mine?”
“Is she crazy or what?” Zane muttered.
Worried that Elara might eventually figure everything out and spill the truth to Zane, Amelia resolved to take control of the situation first—to shape the story before Elara could.
She had no idea that Ella had already beaten her to it.
At this, Zane froze for a brief moment before chuckling softly, his voice gentle. “By the way, Amelia,” he said, “do you remember which hospital my dad was in back then?”
Amelia hesitated, then quickly recovered with a bright smile. “Wasn’t it your mom who was hospitalized?” She’d heard the story from the household staff. Zane’s father had died instantly in the crash; it was his mother who had spent a long time in the hospital.
Her nails pressed into her palm, but she tilted her head thoughtfully. “But that was ages ago. Honestly, I can’t recall which hospital it was now.”

Elara’s Perspective
As usual, I spent my afternoon in the lab. Unfortunately, the rare herb I needed was out of stock, so after finishing what I could, I decided to call it a day and head home.
While driving back, Chloe rang. “Oh, by the way, babe, almost forgot—the leasing agent for your other apartment called yesterday. It’s rented out.”
Following the divorce, I ended up with two apartments in the same complex. One is where I live now; the other is right across the hall. Luckily, the building has two elevators and separates households well, so we mostly avoid each other.
I had put the second unit on the market soon after moving in.
Given its prime location and spacious layout, the rent was high, and I insisted on leasing it to a single tenant. It had been empty for a while.
