Scott.
A sudden jolt ran through me, making my head snap up sharply toward him. “Did you just call him Scott? His name is Scott too?” I asked, disbelief coloring my voice.
Gavin approached, bending down to give the dog a gentle pat on the head, but the little traitor only burrowed deeper into my arms, completely ignoring Gavin’s gesture.
Ungrateful little creature.
A faint smirk tugged at the corner of Gavin’s mouth. His voice remained calm and steady as he said, “He is Scott.”
“Really?” My eyes brightened immediately, catching the warm glow of the winter sunset that wrapped around us like a soft blanket. I felt as if I were sparkling from within, the dimples in my cheeks deepening, my entire face alive with joy.
The teasing comment Gavin had clearly been about to make vanished as he looked at me with that steady gaze.
He gave a small nod. “Have I ever lied to you?”
That was true. Gavin had never once lied to me.
I hugged the dog tightly, pressing my face into his soft fur. Tears continued to fall, but laughter bubbled up alongside them. “Scott? Is it really you?”
“Woof~”
“SC—”
“W!”
A wave of overwhelming happiness surged through me. I glanced up at Gavin, my eyes curved into crescent moons of delight. For a brief moment, I forgot all about the pain of his abandonment, too caught up in this shared joy.
“Gavin, he actually remembers me!”
My features, delicate and refined, lit up with a brightness and vividness that belied everything I’d endured. In that instant, I seemed like the pampered young lady he had once spoiled.
Gavin’s gaze drifted over my glossy pink lips. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed. The frameless glasses perched on the bridge of his nose did a good job of masking the turmoil flickering in his eyes. “What did you just call me?”
