He hadn’t moved, his head still resting against the seat, eyes half closed like a lazy predator. The passing streetlights cast shifting shadows across his face, making it impossible to read him.

Then his voice cut through the quiet, low and unreadable. “Why would her father be any of my concern?”

So that settled it. Vera wasn’t his girlfriend. Probably never had been. If she were, he would’ve cared.
