The sound was unmistakable—just like it had always been—the voice of a younger sister, reluctantly defiant yet ultimately yielding to her older brother’s authority.
The grip around my waist suddenly disappeared, and I practically catapulted myself back into my seat. Without hesitation, I rolled down the window, desperate to let the cold air rush in and dissipate the strange, suffocating tension that had settled around us. Maybe the fresh breeze would also help quiet the frantic beating of my heart.
Everything about that moment felt so… unsettling.
Gavin had always enjoyed teasing me, ruffling my feathers just to watch me get flustered. It was his way of showing affection, in a twisted sort of way.
But what had just happened?
That was something entirely new.
Perhaps he was simply irritated—frustrated because since we’d reunited, I had refused to address him by that old, familiar title. As the heir to the Windsor legacy, how often did anyone dare to defy him? His competitive nature wouldn’t let him accept it.
He had won. Yet again.
As soon as the car came to a halt, I swung the door open and practically bolted out, mumbling a quick goodbye to Gavin. Thankfully, he didn’t utter a single word to stop me. Once inside the quiet sanctuary of my home, I tried to relax with a long, steaming bath and a warm cup of milk, but sleep remained elusive. Feeling defeated, I grabbed my pillow and sought out Chloe.
I found her at her desk, her thick-framed glasses perched on her nose, chugging coffee like it was the elixir of life. She was buried under piles of case files, her fingers flying across the keyboard with unwavering focus. She didn’t even glance up when I entered.
“Hey, sweetie. Shouldn’t you be asleep by now?” I asked softly.
Seeing her pull yet another all-nighter made my heart ache. “Chloe, it’s so late. Why are you still working?”
“I’m gunning for a promotion,” she said, holding up a hefty folder with a spark of triumph in her eyes. “If I win this case, it’s mine. My salary will practically multiply.” Then, her expression softened with a hint of guilt. “Sorry, though… I haven’t made any new progress on the Ethan case lately.”
“Don’t stress about that. Focus on your case—that’s what really matters right now,” I reassured her.
“Thanks, love. I’m going to push as hard as I can. Two years, tops, and we’ll be out of this city for good.” She’d never forgotten her promise to leave New York with me.
A warm glow spread through my chest. Pouring her a fresh glass of milk, I smiled. “Really? That’s incredible! My Chloe is amazing.”
