Betrayed I Upgraded to His Billionaire Brother novel Chapter 146

I furrowed my brow, puzzled by the strange dynamic between Zane and Amelia. It felt like they were playing some twisted game, taking turns to catch me off guard with their sudden appearances. What was their angle? Why the secrecy?

Amelia’s overwhelming fear about the clover necklace was far more intense than I had anticipated. It gnawed at me, stirring a mix of curiosity and concern. Perhaps Zane held the answers I desperately needed.

I quickened my pace and approached him without hesitation. “Why didn’t you just come to the clinic?” I asked, my voice steady but edged with suspicion.

He smiled, the perfect image of a considerate gentleman. “I didn’t want to disrupt your work,” he replied smoothly. “Have you eaten? There’s a great place nearby.”

“No, thanks,” I answered, shaking my head. My shift had stretched late into the afternoon, and I’d missed the cafeteria lunch. Hunger gnawed at me, but not enough to share a meal with Zane. “What do you want?”

His expression shifted, caught off guard by my cold tone. He wasn’t used to this version of me—the old Elara who was always compliant and gentle. This new distance unsettled him.

Gathering himself, he forced a warm smile. “Spouses shouldn’t be apart for so long, Elara. When are you coming back? I’m free this afternoon. I can help you pack.”

As he spoke, he reached out to ruffle my hair—a familiar gesture meant to close the gap between us. But I recoiled instantly, stepping back two paces.

“Zane, did you not hear a word I said the other day?” I said sharply. “I told you I won’t interfere in your life, and you need to stop trying to control mine.”

“Wasn’t the way things were before enough?” he asked quietly.

That had been the pattern of our relationship: distant but familiar, controlled but predictable. The only difference was that we used to live under the same roof.

But Zane had never truly seen me. I could have been lying lifeless in that house for days, and he might never have noticed.

His brow creased with a flicker of regret. “I told you, the past was my fault. It won’t be that way anymore.”

He hesitated, then added, “As for Amelia… I’m probably going to end things with her soon, too.”
