I pressed my lips together, unsure of his intention, but obediently handed my phone over.
His long, well–defined fingers took it. He tapped on the screen–opening my messaging app. I presumed–did something, and then handed it back. He delivered his next words like a king granting a reprieve. “You may go.”
I didn’t stop to see what he’d done. I just grabbed my phone and made my escape.
Outside my apartment door, it was indeed Chloe waiting for me.
Feeling like a thief caught in the act, I grabbed her hand and practically dragged her back into my own apartment, shutting the door before I finally let out a full breath of relief.
I checked my phone. I had a new contact in my messenger list.
Gavin had just removed himself from my blocked list and set himself as my one and only pinned conversation.
“Why is your face so red?” Chloe asked, noticing my state.
I pulled her over to the sofa, taking her wrist to check her pulse while feigning nonchalance. “It’s hot. Gavin cranks the heat way too high.”
“For a grown man…” Chloe, drowsy with fever, nonetheless perked up a little at this topic. “Is he… deficient or something?”
“No.” The denial was out of my mouth before I could think.
The next second, I realized my mistake. Chloe looked at me, her expression full of sudden/\. “And how would you know he’s not?”
“…” I couldn’t very well say I’d felt it. Or, more accurately, had just had a very tangible reminder.
I just got up to make some corn chowder and prepare her fever medication.
After she finished eating and drinking, I didn’t give her the chance to start questioning me–I promptly settled her into bed to sleep.
She was still feverish, so I didn’t feel right leaving for the lab. I worked from home instead.
By noon the next day, Chloe’s fever had broken completely, and I finally headed out for work
The moment I opened my door, I saw Gavin waiting by the elevator.
He stood tall–a full six–foot–two–with the soft afternoon light spilling through the window behind him. It fell across the sharp, handsome lines of his face, tempering that usual unapproachable edge he carried, making him look warmer, almost approachable. For a split second, he reminded me of someone again–Ethan.
I had to admit, sometimes the resemblance was striking. Then again, maybe all beautiful people share certain features–and with similar family backgrounds and upbringings, it’s no wonder they occasionally mirror each other
Hearing my door, he glanced over. “Clinic?”
“Lab.” I replied, turning to lock my door behind me. The clinic was already on holiday break for the New Year. I could now focus entirely on the drug development project.
We rode down together. Ever since that night two days ago, being around him always made me a little tense.
Before that, we’d been proper siblings–estranged siblings, at that. Every time we met, it inevitably led to clashing.
Chapter 158
I was his mistress.
The shift in our relationship was substantial
Stepping out of the elevator, I felt a slight release of tension and headed for my car. I was about to get in when I saw my right rear tire was completely flat, not a hint of air left.
Must have picked up a nail somewhere.
I checked the time. Changing it now would make me late. The R&D department had an important meeting this afternoon, my absence wouldn’t be
great.
“Get in.” Just as I was weighing my options, a Bentley pulled up. The rear window lowered, revealing the man’s sharply defined, handsome profile.
I hesitated for a second. I could probably still make it if 1 hailed a cab.
Gavin shot me a look, his voice cool. “We have an agreement.”
“…” Right. One of the clauses was ‘availability upon request.‘
I opened the door and got in. “I know. I just… need an adjustment period.” Brother. Lover. I needed some time to transition.
Gavin watched me, looking every bit like I was something he couldn’t wait to be rid of. “Adjust to what?”
