Chapter 196
Chapter 196
The next day, I hurried into the medical center with my bag, heading straight for the third–floor clinic.
I’d overslept and was running late.
Once in the examination room, I was uncharacteristically distracted.
This morning, I’d woken up in Gavin’s arms, nestled together like the most intimate of lovers.
It wasn’t the first time I’d shared a bed with him.
But it was the first time since our relationship had… shifted into whatever this was.
I entered my office, setting my things down while checking the time. Seeing I still had a few minutes, I gave myself five to pull myself together.
A distracted doctor is a dangerous one. Once centered, I started calling my first patient.
Fortunately, there weren’t many add–on appointments today.
I was packing up to leave on time for once when a junior nurse knocked and entered. “Dr. Elara, there’s a patient outside asking for a walk–in appointment. Is that alright?”
I asked, “Established patient or new?”
“New.” The nurse paused, then added, “But she says she knows you.”
“I do?” I was puzzled.
No sooner had the words left my mouth than I saw Vera standing at my office door.
She wore a pristine white coat and ankle boots, carrying an expensive, exotic–skin Hermès bag–the picture of polished intellect, as always. “Elara, it’s me. You can squeeze me in, right?”
I was a little surprised. “Have a seat.”
Once she was seated, I began the examination. Quickly, I said, “Nothing major. Having trouble sleeping lately?”
“Yes.” Vera stared at me, then added pointedly, “I haven’t had a single good night’s sleep since I saw you and Gavin leaving that private room
together.”
I hadn’t expected that to be the reason for her visit.
My expression remained neutral. “Whatever you think you saw, there’s no need for you to come to me about it.” She should be taking it up with
Gavin.
Deep down, Vera knew this. A man like Gavin wasn’t one to be easily trapped.
She’d seen firsthand how coldly and decisively he rejected woman after woman who threw themselves at him–from well–bred socialites to seductive temptresses.
Herself included.
So she knew that if Gavin was ever entangled with someone, the only possible answer was that he wanted to be.

No one could force him.
Vera let out a silent sigh. “I would never have come to you if I felt I had any other choice.”
Of course, she wished Gavin would just end things with me himself.
But clearly, that wasn’t happening.
I leaned back in my chair, cutting straight to the heart of the matter. “So what is it you want me to do?”
“Stay away from him. Better yet, make a clean break.”
The words came out almost without hesitation.
She’d thought about this question on the way over. It was the whole point of her visit today.
Only if I cut ties with Gavin would she have a chance of marrying him.
They’d been engaged for years. She’d been his secretary all this time. The more she was around him, the deeper her feelings grew.
She couldn’t just let go.
I smiled faintly, my gaze level. “And what identity are you using to make this request?”
Surprise flickered in Vera’s eyes.
She’d thought I’d agree without a second thought. In her eyes, I was just a well–behaved, easily flustered young girl.
She hadn’t expected me to be so direct.
She clenched her fist slightly. “Gavin and I have an engagement. Whatever this is between you two is doomed. It won’t end well.”
“Does he acknowledge that engagement?” I asked, my stare unwavering.
When Vera fell silent, I didn’t press further. I decided to be blunt. “I can’t do what you’re asking. But it’s not out of any desire to oppose you.”
“Then why?” Vera looked stunned, her eyes searching my face. “Have you… have you developed feelings for Gavin?”
It was a natural assumption. Plenty of women were infatuated with him.
Even as his secretary, she had to fend off his admirers constantly.
“Impossible.” Hearing that, I shook my head in immediate, instinctive denial.
The very idea of having feelings for Gavin felt, on some subconscious level, like a transgression.
I steadied myself. “We have a contract. Breaching it means I owe him a penalty.”
