I knew exactly what I was asking. I just smiled, a thin, brittle thing. “Can you cut ties with her? Completely?”

My pushing, my directness, it clearly rubbed him the wrong way. A flash of anger crossed his face, and he frowned, his voice turning cold. “Elara, she’s my sister–in–law. She’s the mother of my nephew. How could I possibly cut ties with her completely? Not everyone is without blood relatives-”

He stopped mid–sentence.

Without blood relatives. What was he about to say?

I looked at him, my voice strained. “Not everyone is an orphan without any family, right?”

In the silence that followed from Zane, I lost all curiosity about whatever answer he might have cobbled together. I bent down, placed the umbrella carefully by his feet, and turned to walk toward Chloe’s car without another word.

“When will you be home?” His voice came from behind me.

I paused but didn’t turn back. “Later. The hospital’s been swamped lately.”

I had no intention of going back.

Anyway, Zane was always busy. When I’d been abroad those few days, he hadn’t even noticed I was gone.

I’d only promised Victoria not to be the one to tell Zane about the divorce. I never promised to keep playing house.

Victoria, probably worried I’d cause trouble, hadn’t just transferred the money quickly; she’d also fast–tracked the property transfers.

After a morning of running around, I had two fresh property deeds in my hands.

Chloe, paranoid there might be a catch, had taken the day off to come with me. Unexpectedly, the paperwork was flawless, the terms were clean, and everything went scarily smoothly.

Coming out of the title office, Chloe looped her arm through mine in the car. “Honey, I don’t want to work hard anymore. You have to support me~~

“I’ll support you, support you, support you,” I laughed, ruffling her hair. “Want to move in together?”

“What?” Chloe’s eyes lit up, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. “Moving in permanently might be too much–I’m up at the crack of dawn and make a racket. I’d drive you insane. But… crashing for a few days to experience the high life? I’m in.”

We were buzzing with energy, skipping lunch entirely, and eagerly dragged my luggage to the downtown apartment.

Chloe did a lap around the single–floor, three–thousand–square–foot place. “This is insane. I want to move in and never leave.”

“Then don’t leave,” I laughed.

“I can’t!” Chloe flopped onto the sofa dramatically.

“Why not?” I asked, unpacking a box. “You seeing someone?”

“Bullshit. A man would just get in the way of me making money.” Chloe’s family background was rough; she’d known what she wanted since she was a kid.

“Then why can’t you live with me?” I was puzzled.

“I’m not dating anyone, but you are still married,” Chloe gave me a pointed look. “I just have this feeling you and Zane aren’t going to have a clean break.”
