Chapter 29
“He can’t stand the thought of Amelia taking the heat.”
But once Victoria handed me that divorce certificate…
Zane’s wishes wouldn’t matter anymore.
Chloe got up to help me unpack.
While we were at it, I went online and ordered a bunch of daily necessities and kitchen stuff. Watching the apartment slowly start to feel like an actual home, something in my chest began to settle, piece by piece.
Turns out, someone else was even happier than I was about my smooth divorce proceedings.
This person, upon hearing the news, was the first to rush to the hospital to wait for me to finish my shift.
Colton was sitting in the chair across from my desk. I felt this weird pressure, and even had him double–check one of my prescriptions.
The patient, who was a referral from a friend, joked, “Dr. Grayson, this is making me think I might be really sick.” Everyone at the hospital knew Colton was mine and Elias’s mentor.
Colton smiled. “Don’t worry. She specializes in the tricky cases. For her, your condition is a piece of cake. This one just still acts like a kid in front of me.” He glanced over the prescription and handed it back to me.
Over the years, Elara was the most naturally gifted person he’d ever met in medicine. If it hadn’t been for Margaret Windsor’s meddling, his student’s career would probably be a hundred times better than it was now. She wouldn’t have had to avoid putting her name on her own drug research.
“The approach is correct, dosage is spot on. You should see results soon.” This patient’s colonoscopy showed severe, recurrent colitis, which is why they’d come to me. After reviewing the reports, I’d drafted a treatment plan. The patient had come as a long shot, but hearing Colton say that, they looked immensely relieved. “Dr. Grayson, I’ll definitely bring you a thank–you gift next time.”
I waved a hand. “I’d rather you not need a next time. But remember, keep a positive outlook–nothing’s more important than your health.” Based on the meds, a seven–day course should do it. But as a doctor, you can never be too absolute.
After I saw my last patient, Colton stood up. “Let’s go. Sylvia’s made dinner.”
“Looks like Elias and I are getting a free meal again.” Colton’s wife, Sylvia, was an amazing cook and incredibly thoughtful. Every time she knew I was coming, she made dishes I loved.
Elias was waiting in his car out front. Colton only came to the hospital once a month. This time, thanks to me, Elias seized the chance to pester him with
case questions the whole way.
Colton got annoyed. “Elara never asks this many questions,” he grumbled, shooting Elias a look.
Elias didn’t mind. He glanced at me in the rearview mirror with a gentle smile. “Elara studied under you for years. Seriously, I should be calling her
senior.”
It was true. Colton was just Elias’s university professor, but I’d been learning medicine from him since I was a kid. He was definitely biased toward me. even waiting until I’d started and finished college before he finally retired. After that, no university’s offer for a guest professorship could tempt him back. Strictly speaking, I was Colton’s one and true protégé.
I laughed. “If you dare call me that, I wouldn’t dare answer.”
While we chatted, the car pulled up in front of Colton’s house. It was a quiet neighborhood of small villas, each with great light.
Hearing the car, Sylvia came out to greet us, scolding fondly, “Elara, Elias, you two haven’t visited in ages!” She was big on health and wellness, with a rosy complexion that made her look barely fifty.

Chapter 29
Elias had brought gifts, knowing we were coming. As I helped him carry stuff in, I smiled brightly. “Tll definitely visit more often from now on I hope you won’t get sick of me.” Not being Mrs. Grayson anymore meant I’d have a lot more free time
“I couldn’t ask for more!” Sylvia only had one son and had always treated me, the girl who’d followed her husband around since childhood, like a half–daughter. Hearing this made her really happy.
Colton was ushering us inside when Sylvia suddenly remembered something. “Oh, we have a guest.”
Her gaze lingered on me for a second, hesitant.
“Who is it?” At Colton’s level, visitors usually scheduled a week in advance. Judging by my wife’s expression, it wasn’t a relative either. But this person had gotten in without an appointment.
