chapter 46
His time–every spare moment–would be spent with her. And it would never be enough.
That cake he brought me? Just a coincidence. With Zane, I only ever got the leftovers.
The leftover attention.
As I reached the estate, my phone buzzed.
The half–formed smile vanished when I saw the unknown number. I declined the call and texted back: [Consider it my good deed. Take your daughter to the doctor in peace.]
The butler hurried out with an umbrella. “You’ll catch a cold! The Madam will have our heads.”
I offered a polite lie. “Grandmother has a soft heart. She wouldn’t blame you.”
The dinner was livelier than usual. Both my aunts were back with their families.
When they saw me, no one bothered with pleasantries–they simply acted like I wasn’t there. Fine by me. I went to help set the table.
I’d just picked up a wine glass when a hand slapped my backside: “Elara, long time no see.”
I turned, fighting the urge to smash the glass over his head. “Theodore.”
“Miss me?” His eyes traveled over me before tugging at my coat. “Why so bundled up? Afraid of me?”
I stepped back, pulling my collar free. The servants had finished and slipped away.
My expression cooled. “What’s wrong? Thinking of fleeing the country again?”
“Elara!” He grabbed my neck, teeth clenched. “You never learn, do you?”
“Go ahead, strangle me,” I forced out, meeting his gaze coldly. “Or shut up.”
He suddenly laughed, a twisted approval in his eyes. “More fire now. A pity I didn’t get to you before Zane did.” He released me, patting my cheek. “But married women have their-”
Slap.
The sound was sharp. Someone called from the main hall, “What was that?”
Theodore glared, ready to strike back.
I lowered my voice. “Try it. I have quite a collection of your nude photos. Your enemies would love them, wouldn’t they?”
“Theodore? Elara?” Aunt Evelyn walked in. “What’s going on?”
Theodore forced a smile. “A bug. She was helping me swat it and hit my face.”
Evelyn tutted at the red handprint. “Be gentler, Elara. He just got out of the hospital.”
“Out of the hospital?”
“Didn’t you know? Right after the last dinner, he offended someone the moment he landed. Nearly died.”
I raised a brow in feigned surprise.

chapter 46
Evelyn left. Theodore stared, licking his teeth. “When did you take them?”
“After you tried to rape me and passed out.”
He’d harassed me for years. After Gavin sent me back, Theodore was relentless. I always took the punishment.
So I played innocent for two years. On my eighteenth birthday, at the old lady’s banquet, he dragged me into a guest room. Just as he tore at my clothes, he “suddenly” passed out.
I screamed. When the door opened, the guests saw everything–a terrified girl, clothes disheveled. Attempted rape.
To save face, the old lady shipped him abroad. For six years.
Life got harder, but I hadn’t lost. Better than fearing a predator in my sleep.
“You little-” He fumed, then leaned in with a nasty smile. “You look at those photos when you can’t sleep, don’t you? Zane not satisfying you?”
Disgust washed over me. I sneered. “Who’d want a stunted toothpick?”
I turned to leave.
Theodore was a coward–he preyed on the weak. Confrontation kept him in check. Especially after six years ago… he was low–key scared of me.
But he couldn’t let go of his obsession.
He grabbed my wrist. “So you did take a good look?“.
