chapter 47
“I-” Theodore’s smile cracked, his face flushing an ugly red. He looked like a spoiled trout gasping on a riverbank–utterly humiliated but powerless to
retaliate.
A few of the younger cousins hiding near the hallway didn’t even bother to smother their laughter. One of them snorted so hard he had to fake a coughing fit.
Let’s be real–everyone knew Theodore was Grade–A trash. The guy had been a walking scandal since middle school; “clean” wasn’t in his vocabulary
But he was also Margaret’s golden boy. And in this family? Aside from Gavin, who the hell would dare call him out so publicly?
The best part? Gavin didn’t just say it–Theodore had to stand there and take it. He forced a stiff laugh, trying to play it off. “Come on, man, don’t joke like that. You’re making me lose face in front of everyone.”
Gavin didn’t even blink. His sapphire–blue eyes–cold and mesmerizing–remained fixed on Theodore with utter disdain. “Do I look like I’m joking?”
Another wave of laughter rippled through the room, louder and more brazen this time.
A warmth I hadn’t felt in years spread through my chest.–
He’s doing this for me. He remembered what Theodore did.
He remembered everything.
The laughter died abruptly as a clear, sharp voice cut through from the elevator.
“What is so amusing?”
That voice–icy and commanding–sliced through the air.
My spine straightened instantly. On reflex, I chimed in with the other juniors, my voice a quiet murmur. “Grandmother.”
The only one who didn’t was Gavin. He and Margaret had been at war for as long as I could remember. He rarely showed up, and when he did, he never played by her rules.
Margaret’s gaze swept the room like a hawk spotting prey. Her sharp eyes finally landed and stuck on me.
“And Zane?” Her tone was deceptively light. “Too busy for us again?”
I knew this was coming. My fingertips pressed into my palms, but my voice came out soft and measured. “He’s dealing with a company emergency. He sends his regards and will try to stop by later.”
“Ha.” Her laugh was a short, mocking sound. “A company emergency? Or an emergency of a more… personal nature?”
I lowered my gaze. “Grandmother, please…”
“You can’t even command your own husband’s attention,” she announced, her voice dripping with contempt and loud enough for everyone to hear. “And yet you have the audacity to defend that woman online, making a spectacle of yourself! Do you have any idea how this reflects on our family? The Windsors are becoming a laughingstock!”
I didn’t. But if even Gavin–who’d made it clear he wanted nothing to do with me–had mentioned it, the rumors must be bad.
“People are saying we mistreat you! That you’re a desperate fool clinging to the Grayson name, swallowing your pride just to keep your place!”
Margaret jabbed a finger in my direction. “You will answer for this embarrassment. You’ve forgotten your place, and it’s time you remembered it.”
