There was a noise near the elevators. A girl in her early twenties came rushing out of a conference room like she’d dropped something.

“You’re still here?”

She jumped, then started explaining like she was flustered. “Oh! Sorry–I thought everyone was gone, so 1 turned off the lights in the hall.”

“Do you need me to walk you down?”

I asked, “Did your meeting wrap up?”

“Yeah, we finished a while ago.”

Then she remembered something. “Oh, but the boss got a call around nine and took off in a hurry. He probably forgot to tell you.”

For a second, I just stood there. And then, weirdly, I felt my feet touch solid ground again.

That little cake, him suddenly offering to pick me up tonight–it all felt surreal, like something that wasn’t really happening.

Leaving me stranded here this late? That felt like the real Zane. That was his style.

It never crossed his mind that I might feel hurt, too.

No one ever cared much about how I felt, so I got good at pretending it didn’t matter.

I pulled myself together and found my voice. “It’s fine. You should head home–get back safe.”

He left at nine.

It was after three in the morning now. Six whole hours, and it never once occurred to him to check on me. Not a call, not a text–no explanation.

But honestly, that wasn’t even the part that got me.

It was two days later. I was at the clinic seeing patients when Mary called.

“Ma’am, do you think you could come by today?”

“What’s wrong?”

I thought maybe the divorce papers were ready.

She hesitated. “Max had a high fever the other night. He’s been listless, not eating well. The Young Master thought… maybe you could come take a look? Help get him back on track.”

I almost laughed. Walking to the window, I said, “You heard everything the other day, didn’t you?”

I have nothing to do with the Graysons now.

Mary sounded uncomfortable, “I heard, ma’am, but… the Young Master insisted.”

“Then tell him the truth.”

“I promised not to tell Zane about the divorce,” I cut in, my voice flat. “I never promised to play nanny to his mistress’s kid. Isn’t Amelia a med student?

Let her handle it.”

Then I hung up.

After taking a moment to steady myself, I returned to my patient. “Sorry for the interruption. Let’s continue.”

“No rush, dear, no rush.”

Eleanor’s eyes lit up. She grabbed my hand, beaming. “So you’re really single?”

I’m young, I take my work seriously, and over the years, plenty of patients have tried to set me up. I started wearing a wedding band just to get them to drop it.

I remembered this granny–always fretting over her grandson’s love life. I almost smiled. “I’m getting divorced…”

“Divorce!” Eleanor’s expression turned fierce. “Good for you! I couldn’t help overhearing–sorry about that–but men who cheat are the worst. If you stay, you’ll only suffer more.”

“Mhm.”

Her wrinkled hands holding mine felt… warm. The kind of warmth I barely remember.

My voice softened. “I know. The divorce is already in process.”
